I'm currently camperless, but now and if I didn't plan on using the camper for a couple months or more I take it off, only takes 5-10 minutes. Makes the truck ride stiffer than the 19.5s did unloaded.Re: New user, TC Tire questions Grit dog wrote: I'll suggest that even OE wheels with OE or upgraded tires will run safely, as evidenced by the thousands of trucks doing it daily, year in and year out. I've really thought about that over the years. I used to have an AF 811 and was usually ~7200 on the rear axle towing the boat and had the Rickson 19.5s on the truck. Drove and handled great. Sold the camper and then the tires, but I don't know if I'll run those tires again when I get another camper. I used to see guys with SRW trucks on OEM tires with campers bigger and heavier than mine hauling enclosed trailers all over the place and never seen anybody with a problem. I've always wondered how much safety buffer really is in the tire ratings, since all the manufacturers for the same size generally rate them at the same weight and you know they're constructed differently.Re: New exhaust yes or no. ls1mike wrote: There is plenty that can be done with exhaust and intakes on EFI modern engines. Look at the Ford MOD Motors and LSX motors. My own 11 Sec 1/4 LS1 Trans Am is a good example. The difference between an LS6 intake on an LS1 is about 15 to 20 HP at the wheels without a tune. Next you do the tune and get even more gains. The best way to do it is on the Dyno. Now having said that a catback alone won't do it. You may see a few hp at the wheels, but you won't even notice it and you will be out at least 500 bucks. A complete exhuast system with a tune on a modern EFI vehicle may net anywhere from 20 to 40 RWHP depending on the engine and type of exhaust system. My WS6 gained 26 HP and 32 FT/LBS of toruqe from a custom exhaust, stock cats and mid length headers. Then with the LS6 intake I picked up another 16 hp and 13 ft/lbs of torque. All at the wheels, Dyno proven. Problem is you have to be willing to do the whole thing. Headers, Cats, exhuast and tune. So you are looking at a pretty good chunk of money. 1200 bucks for nice headers, 300 bucks for a dyno tune and at least 600 for a complete custom exhaust. More if you get an off the shelf catback. If you are not trying to pick up tenths in the 1/4 mile, I am not sure it is really worth it unless you like the sound. It is why my 6.0 Chevy truck, which is really similar to the 5.7 in my WS6 is bone stock minus a tune to change the Transmission shift points and when the torque converter locks up. Nice car! To the op, leave it alone until it falls off, then pick something nice. Performance or mileage won't be worth the cost.Re: Is it good enough?Pin weight of 4963? That is more than the truck weighs! How much does the rest of the trailer weigh?Re: Short trips in East Tennessee? Thanks everybody, and thanks to sleepy! Between here and the list he gave me on the phone, I've got a LOT on my plate to do! I knew there were a bunch of things to do here, but just have to find them. Sorry I haven't posted sooner, but my internet has been out for a few days. Hopefully I'll have some neat pictures to share in a couple months. Jim...where do you live out there? I lived in Bremerton while I was stationed at the Bangor sub base and then over in Richland when I got out of the Navy before I moved here.Re: Towing Boat with T.C.Nice Bullet! ^^^ They were as rare as Allisons when I lived out west but now I see 'em all the time living here! To the OP...20' Allison XB-2003 with a 225 Mercury Promax. Fun little rig. Re: Pyrometer and diesel trucksInteresting to read the responses here. I've got an '07 5.9, pretty much same as the OP's truck. I put gauges on a long time ago and kept the truck stock for a long time. You will be amazed how hot the EGTs on this motor will get in stock form. I've had mine at 1425 when I chickened out. I didn't figure I could hurt it in stock form but that seemed hot enough, haha! Contrary to popular belief, downshifting and winding it up actually produces higher EGTs. I've seen the hottest in the 2700rpm range. At lower rpm the computer is programmed to not give as much fuel and it is virtually impossible to get EGTs too high by means of lugging with the auto tranny. I really like having my gauges, just gives me a little extra info on what the truck is doing. Boost/Tranny/Pyro. As far as cooldown goes, think of it like this: How many people out there who nothing about these trucks drive the wheels off them and never let them cool down and they just keep going? I let mine come down to around 350, but if you're waiting for 300 degrees, you'll be waiting for a while. Seems like wasted time and fuel to do that. Now, since I've put the Smarty Jr. on, my EGTs are much lower at WOT and towing, but they do come up higher down low now. With reduced EGTs that temperature is now inside the cylinder so I've made a lower EGT limit for myself. That's another topic though.Short trips in East Tennessee?I live about a half hour West of Knoxville. Lived here for about a year and a half and have yet to take the camper out. Hopefully in the next month or two things will settle down and I'll be able to get out for a night or two here and there. I'm mainly looking for a place to go park the truck and camper and just relax, maybe walk around and do some practicing with my new to me SLR camera. I know there's a guy on here, "sleepy" I think, looks like he lives real close to me, I know I need to send him a pm sometime. Just curious where good places are around here. Always enjoy meeting other campers too. It's weird how some campgrounds people keep to themselves and others you talk to everybody that walks by. That's what I enjoy. Thanks for any input! Have a good one, BrianWaxing FilonMy Arctic Fox has been sitting more than I had hoped for a while and is due for a wash from sitting. Got the streaks running down it below clearance lamps, windows, etc... I've used Nu Finish for years with great success. I bet if I were to ask about waxes it would about turn into an oil thread as there are so many choices. My plan is to wash the camper with dish soap, and then use a foam pad on my buffer at a low speed (easier than elbow grease) with the Nu Finish. I've used this on my boat and car and truck with great results. Pros or cons? Just thinking out loud. I've got a few projects to finish up, lawn, oil change on car and truck, and putting my work car, 89 Corolla, back together after pulling the motor to fix some pesky oil leaks. After that I plan on going somewhere with it even if just for a night. I've lived in east TN for a year and a half now and the camper hasn't been used that whole time. It's driving me nuts! Can't wait to get it back on the road. Thanks for any input or advice. Have a good one, BrianRe: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today? It was 3 days ago, but I finally got mine back! It's been sitting in Ohio for a year in my parents yard. Finally have everything straightened out and brought it down to TN the other day. Now to find somewhere to go, haha! Oh, the other thing I've been doing, and this does count for today, I've been trying to figure out why my solar isn't working and believe I have tracked it down to what I hope is a bad connection up at the panel on the roof. Down side is that it's cold and I have to un-goop the screws and pull it off the roof to get to the plug, so that will have to wait for a warmer day. This pic was from this morning to keep in the spirit of the thread :)
