I deal with dealerships and their mechanics on a regular basis and I can tell you, without a doubt, they think the newer diesels are going to be nightmares to keep on the road as a whole as they get older. No matter the brand. Also, I would say the cost spread between gasoline and diesel is more than $1Re: How well does the RAM 2500 6.4 Hemi tow? hvac wrote: Hammerboy wrote: hvac wrote: And another thought. Why are fleets dumping diesels like UPS and cable companies? Why is Ford introducing a rebuildable big block push rod gasser? Why? Speaks volumes. I think it's simply because of the nature of their work, a lot of urban stop and go driving idling etc. With the current diesel emissions that doesn't work really well, semi trucks that travel on the other hand you don't see them going to gas because for them diesel makes more sense. So the big 3, all have a new baby diesel. Everyone is all excited. A form should be signed by all who buy one so that they understand some basic issues. Buy your diesel from high volume outlets. Keep receipts as your on your own if you get bad fuel Buy you DEF with caution. Keep receipts. Old DEF is not covered in your warranty Don't drive locally or idle as this will result into the engine going in a shut down mode. Your emission system is only covered under a 3/36 warranty. EGR coolers fail frequently, cost to repair exceeds 2k. Your intake manifold will be clogged by 75k to 100k miles. Deleting or tuning will resolve many of the above issues but will violate your warranty and the federal clean air act. Seems reasonable?? Dan Other than all of that **** plus the fuel systems are time bombs, they’re real cost effective compared to a gas truck LOL. And as of today, fuel is about $1 a gallon more than gas. I just drove from Phoenix back to Nashville and it was consistently $1 or more the entire way. The reason the big 3 are reenergizing gas motors is obvious…..the new age diesels ARENT RELIABLE anymore compared to pre 2007ish. It’s just a fact. Just go ask your local dealer mechanic.Re: Ford Super Duty 6.2 Super Ike Gauntlet Pull IdaD wrote: spud1957 wrote: Of course it always turns into the diesel argument. Yes, high fuel mileage going up the gauntlet. What are your diesels getting going up it? I suspect the delta between the two is not much different than non gauntlet towing. I think they run around 4 or a little better on that particular run from videos I've seen in the past. Real world with a camper you're probably comparing 7 or 8 with a big gas truck versus 11 or 12 with a diesel. Not great either way. Mileage is only part of the equation, though. Screaming up a grade at 5500 RPM isn't my idea of a relaxing trip even though I know they're designed to do it. I would also bet that the truck in the video would struggle significantly more if it were pulling something like a fifth wheel that drags a lot more air. In my mind there's really not much cost difference between the two if you look at a total ownership cost. The diesel is more up front and will cost a little more to maintain, but will get better fuel economy and resale value. Which begs the question - if the cost delta is immaterial, why not opt for the higher performing diesel? That's something you can appreciate anytime you get behind the wheel. If this were true then your statement of going with the diesel would be obvious. The problem is, this isn’t the case. The diesel cost more up front by $8-10k, it takes 2-3x more oil every oil change, fuel filters are $100 and up every 2-3 oil changes, fuel is $.30-50 more per gallon, not to mention if you ever have a def/dpf failure or a turbo failure or injector failure or complete fuel system replacement (any of these sound familiar? I bet they do) then the cost of ownership is way out of balance. The diesel pulls a ton better. Trust me I know. I’m a auto dealer and sell lots of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks so I’ve driven and used all of them in gas and diesel. If you pull over 10k lbs more than once a week I would go diesel. If you don’t, save yourself a bunch of money and time and buy the gas truck. Also, the gas truck, in my opinion is a better daily driver than a diesel.Re: Travelling is not getting easier bgum wrote: The restrictions don't bother us at all but dieing from a preventable condition does. We normally head north during leaf peeping season but with Tennessee in denial about the vaccinations and masks we will choose somewhere else. Somewhere we can sit in a restaurant where people wear masks and are fully vaccinated. We will wait and see what the conditions are like in the fall. We can beat this crud if we imposed vaccinations, masks, and improved testing of travelers. We don't plan to try to get around any restrictions as they are put in place to save people's lives. To do otherwise should be considered criminal. Yeah, you probably need to stay away from Louisiana as well. I wouldn’t call my state as being in denial but having common sense much like Louisiana has. I was just in Louisiana Tuesday and they appear to be living a normal life there much like Tennessee is.
