I own an Alaskan and have camped it at around 17 degrees. I can't tell for sure if it save money over a full up one. I have a 2006 diesel ram shortbread. I can tell you it a joy going down the highway at 70 to 75. I average between 14 and 16 mpg depending on my foot and the torain. Its not the biggest camper but the construction quality is great. Mine is 2 year old. I love th fact that I can cruise down the highway without any worries including low bridges. I store it in the garage. The upper part is insulated you can get insulation on the floor. The side walls are not insulated except for the fact that you double wall with the cabinets. To deal with the issue of fully charging my golf cart batteries, I installed a DC to DC charger with a 2awg welding cable from truck batteries. Installed a quick disconnect like the ones used on fork lift. The unit is the CTEK DS250 dual with the smart charger. This combination allows me quickly charge low house batteries when the truck batteries are fully charged by adjusting the output voltage based on the state of the batteries. It will back off the charge automatically as the batteries approach a full charge. When I first installed the charger the house batteries where at around 60% charge and my truck alternator was putting out 60A to house batteries. The output is automatically adjusted as the house batteries % increase. The other benefit is that the voltage output is adjusted based on the state of charge of house batteries independently of the truck batteries. Its also a battery Isolator with a built in 20A solar charge if you have solar panels. And the solar charger will also charge your truck batteries when the house batteries are charged. My converter only charges at 30 to 35 Amps so charging with a generator will actually take longer. I rarely take generator along. I installed a ctek dual DC to DC charger with the smart pass. It acts as an isolator and can charge at up to 80A with the voltage output being adjusted based on charging rate. I installed #2 cable from the truck batteries to the charger located near the camper batteries. The charger also has an 20A input for solar panels. I don't want to lug a generator for long weekends boondocking. So far I am very happy.327Views0likes0Comments
