If I was doing this, (I built our home) I would point out a few pit falls that got me in the past. First thing I truly believe you could not build a camper less expensively than buying a used one, a camper that is in good shape with no water damage. There are some out there. If budget/expense is your main focus, I don't think you could do it for less money than buying a good used unit. If a custom built, what you want, how you want it built, where the budget is no object, camper then you are on the right track. I think $5000 is probably wishful thinking, materials add up like crazy these days, $5k would not go far when buying quality materials. Im sure you could build it for less than $5k but I don't think it could compare with factory built unit in looks, utility, comfort. and quality. I think it all boils down to what you want, how much you want to spend and being happy with the final outcome of the unit you decide to build. I am retired now but when working for a large organization, capable of building anything we needed. We always ran the numbers on "build/buy" and what made the most economical sense of the item we needed. Its surprising how many items were cheaper to just buy vs building in house.Re: How to store truck tailgate when off truckI built basically the same as gvgeode , mine is vertical, and lined with carpet. The frame work surrounds the tail gate and protects it. The tail gate is in excellent condition, just trying to keep it that way. I see gvgeode has his turn buckles stored with his tailgate, my turnbuckles, TL tie down pieces and all the clips are stored near the tailgate hanging on the wall, everything in its place.Re: Dinghy Tow Tacoma w/Manual TransmissionWhen we were looking, I was told, like "route forty", toyota does not approve any of their vehicles to be towed 4 down. I moved on, if you flat tow a standard shift toyota and it works out, great, I just didn't want to invest money to "see" if it worked out.Re: Honda2000 in an Onan compartmentThis is a very interesting topic, at least for me. https://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/30064133/srt/pa/pging/1/page/1.cfm I wanted this guy to finish this project, but as you can see it just kind of ended. This isn't exactly what you were asking but this as close as Ive seenRe: Torklift RustI would not hesitate in buying that setup One of the reasons I would go for it, is that, any piece of that set that looks questionable, you can get separate items from torque lift. When I bought. my pickup the frame mounted torque lift was already on my truck , all I needed was the slide in pieces for my truck. when it was all said and done it wasn't too expensive. Torque lift is pretty good about working with you getting you any parts you. might need.Re: Help finding this DC Outlethttp://rvdoctorgeorge.com/ You could check with RV DR George, he is in Sacramento CA They have tons of stuff and a call to them or an email might produce what you are looking for. I have been there a few times, and have contacted them looking for older RV items, and they have always tried to help.Re: Apple's cooperation with Chinese officialsI appreciate the information from the original poster, I would think the tech area is a good place to post this. Most if not all RVer have and use a smart phone, all the information makes all or us more informed. Information is a good thing. I would like to mention, that some of the posts dont appeal to me, so i dont open them, some of them seem like they would not interest me and i find they actually do interest me. What ever the post I would never assume to suggest that they be removed, we have moderators, I feel confident that they know what is acceptable with out me trying to tell them how to do their jobs. To the original poster, Thank youRe: Insurance Coverage facts wanted:First off, I have nothing but personal experience to offer. We were towing a travel trailer, I don't believe we were over weight. We were towing over the Tehachapi Mts in California. a guy passed us as we were passing a truck he got caught between our trailer and the divider. CHP responded, No witnesses stopped, actually no one stopped except us and the other guy. CHP deemed it as a no fault accident. No questions about the truck/trailer None. His vehicle was pretty roughed up the trailer lost a running light, really no other damage... some tire marks but no dents no scratches. The other guy had relative lawyer in LA and sued, the insurance company took care of everything. Never a question about the truck/trailer. The travel trailer had no other insurance other than that it was being towed by our truck that was insured. Our Insurance company is State Farm. The other guy sued cause months later his dog died ( he was in the car) and was traumatized, sued for diminished value, and of course to repair his vehicle, State Farm took care of everything. We ended up having a trial went to court. Not one word about the Travel trailer / truck, nothing about weights, nothing about any thing about the trailer/ truck. All of this "pain in the rear" situation and not one word about the truck and trailer. Of course there was no deaths or injuries(besides the dog) I thought State Farm was very good about the whole thing. I know this does not answer truck camper weights, weight police, and all of that. Just real life hi way accident and how it went.Re: How To Fix Blue Ox MistakeAs a guy getting ready to buy a towing set up, this is all good info, thanks I will keep all of this in mind when I purchase my outfit. I believe I have read other comments similar to the original post about Blue Ox , but those were just vague comments, nothing I can put my finger on at the moment.Re: Tie-down systems performance/safety vs costOur first camper we had happijacs they came with the camper, they worked fine, no problem connecting them and I felt safe with them. This camper has the Torklift, truck came with them so we have them. I don't feel any safer, the camper does not seem like moves any more or less than with the happyjacs. Honestly I could not tell the difference.
