My Cougar is the same way. It got annoying, and I thought even a little dangerous, to have to get out and close the tailgate in the middle of hitching and unhitching. I solved the issue by going with a Vee gate. The axle should be the same distance from the rear in a short bed and long bed truck in the Ford. The extra length is forward of the wheel well. But can't say how your hitch was installed in the old truck. That is what confused me as well. I never used a slider in the SB 2012 silverado and was able to hitch up with no issues at all and had tons of clearance. I always thought that a LB truck is only longer from the cab to the axle. According to the rv dealer, where I purchased the reese hitch from, said that a LB is also longer from the axle to the tailgate; mistified me as well.Re: Longbed tailgate will hit camper when hitchingThanks for the replies. Just wanted to get some advice and might think of an extender, didn't know much about them. The hitch cannot be moved since the bed of the truck was already integrated from Ford with under the bed rails and had to use Reese Elite Series Hitch. The hitch cannot be moved due to it sits into 4 pucks on the bed.Longbed tailgate will hit camper when hitchingI have been searching the forums and cannot find assistance with regards to a longbed truck. I went from a sb truck to a lb truck and have the Reese Elite Pro 20k hitch. When I am hitching my camper my wife must raise the tailgate prior to setting the pin or the tailgate will hit the camper. When I had my sb truck I could hit and unhitch the camper all day long by myself and now it takes two people for this task. Is there a solution that I could purchase to allow me a little more room from the tailgate to the camper to make hitching and unhitching a little easier?
