We don't have to unhook/hookup (they have RV parking); deal with rain, sleet, ice when setting up or leaving (we leave in Jan); or wait for 20 minutes for the RV to warm up; and those conveniences cost us about double what the campgrounds charged us. IMHO worth every penny. Feel free to pm me with any further questions. Camp on! Re: Hwy 17 from Mt Pleasant/Charleston to Wilmington NC?X2. 31 very nice ride and good MB bypass.Re: I-95 (Maine) Advice ?Take 95 Bangor to Gardiner exit (small toll). Then 295 to Falmouth exit, where you get back on 95 (toll). You can save a little toll money by staying on 295 a little further to its end, where you get back on 95, but traffic can be more white-knuckle that way. They're both good roads....no serious construction.Re: Garden State Parkway service area rest breaks NJ6PACK wrote: Just make sure that you are not parked in the commuter lot section of the rest area in the early AM rush....if you do you will find yourself boxed in very quickly. I drive to the Cheesequake rest area and catch a bus to NYC daily and at least twice a year there will be a RV boxed in because all the commuters parked around the RV to cath a bus while RV people are sleeping....The lots will be almost full by 6:30am If you stop in the Cheesequake, Monmouth & Forked River rest areas look for the Academy bus sighns...that is the commuter lot so don't park there. Hope this info helps Thanks for the tip. Now if the weather will only allow me to escape northern New England I'll give it a try!Re: Military/DoD Are you active duty, retired or a veteran?US Navy....4 years active, 2 reserve. AG2Garden State Parkway service area rest breaksDoes anyone know the story on staying for several hours, or even overnight, at a Garden State Parkway service area? Is it allowed? Is it advisable? Is any one better than another?Re: What Are Your Plans For Christmas & New Years?New Years eve, we'll be on the beach at St. Augustine to watch the great fireworks show there, for the fourth time. Planned the beginning of our winter travels to be at Anastasia State Park just for that purpose. Missed last year due to DW's breast cancer scare, but with good news from the Dr. this week we're headed south (from Maine) real soon!Overnighting/New York ThruwayOf the several service and rest areas on the southbound side of the New York Thruway/I-87 between Albany and NYC, I'd like opinions on the best bet for overnighting. I'm especially interested in security and noise and smell from idiling big rigs. Thanks.Re: Extended stop at Mass. Turnpike service plaza? Ed C wrote: Why don't you take I84? There is a Pilot just after I90 and CT has a nice Rest Area near Danbury (Exit 2) where RVs are welcome. I think it's shorter too. Been using 84 since it was first paved, and DW wants to see some different scenery! She's also spooked by the Exit 2 rest area; very nice place to stop, but we where alone there one night last March and had a pan-handler come calling in the middle of the night. Bear spray was standing-by but not needed. I'd go there again, but not if no one else was there.Re: Extended stop at Mass. Turnpike service plaza?OP: Thank you all so much. Very helpful. I'll be traveling from northern Vermont, mostly on I-91 to I-90, then west to I-87 and on down to Cape May NJ via the Garden State Parkway. Back in the day, I would go from Maine to Cape May with just a few pit stops, but I'm thinking now that a major rest stop with some shut-eye would be nice (and smart). Any additional overnighting spots between Lee, Mass. and Newburgh, NY would be welcome.
