Can a 6-speed alone account for such a difference in fuel economy? What time of the year was this driving as described above and how far is it to work? I also do not let mine warm up but drive off within a minute of having started the engine regardless of the temperature outside. Mine is an automatic transmission and I have roughly a 200 pound load in/on the truck - mostly the weight of the cap. My driving is on a mixture of flat and steeps for the 5 miles to work with half a dozen stoplights interspersed. My speed never exceeds 45 mph - probably averages 30 mph. This with winter temperatures is how I wound up at 11.6 mpg. I did strictly hand calculating of the mileage for the winter driving.Re: Diesel vs gas...................... Rvndave wrote: 22 mpg running to and from work makes a diesel a no brainer for me. When I picked up my new 2005 Silverado Duramax from the dealer on June 29, I got 20.7 mpg on the interstate in cruize control at 50 mph for the 250 mile trip home. Reluctantly using it to commute 10 miles round trip to work for the past three months of winter with temperatures between 5-40 degrees averaging say 25 degrees, I got 11.6 mpg. Thus I question the circumstances of obtaining 22 mpg.Re: Diesel vs gas......................Thanks Stephen! Your response leads to more questions. What kinds of maintenance does a diesel require that is different from a gasser? Also, I've read that diesels, at least in colder climates, do not like to be used for short run delivery use, or for short shopping trips. Aside from the gas consumption, why would a diesel motor not like this treatment? I have seen such statements in other forums but wihout any explanation whatsoever as to why this would be so. RayRe: Diesel vs gas......................It's been stated several times in this thread that a diesel engine likes to be used hard such as when pulling a heavy load and it likes being run hotter than a gas motor. My assumptions or speculations have been that this is due to the need to run hot to burn the fuel cleanly or that it is necessary to burn any deposits off of the cylinder walls to keep the motor interior clean. Can someone or two enlighten me with the some persuasive details to support these claims?Re: Diesel vs gas...................... You are NOT getting 20mpg pulling and 32 foot 5th wheel with 3 slides. I'm NOT buying it. I would bet he is, depending on his driving! The $1.55 diesel cost in ilovetocamp's statement apears to have been made many months ago rather than recently. Could it have been a re-posting of a dated post from another forum? If not, I ask again ... Where is diesel this price in August 2005?Re: Diesel vs gas......................================================================================ ---------------------------------------------------------------- Paying $1.55 a gallon for diesel and getting over 20mpg. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel 2004 Challenger 32TKB 5th wheel with 3 slides. ---------------------------------------------------------------- You are NOT getting 20mpg pulling and 32 foot 5th wheel with 3 slides. But my question is where in the world are you guys getting diesel for $1.55 or $1.57 per gallon????? The prices here in New England are running around $2.60 to $2.80 per gallon for diesel and either +/- 10 cents more for premium gas???Re: Diesel vs gas......................For what it's worth: I finally took delivery of my new truck (see signature below). I paid $2.65/gal for diesel near Hartford, CT and $2.54/gal in Burlington ,VT. I got 20.7 mpg on the interstate at 50 mph in cruise control while driving the 260 miles home.
