Another vote for the St. Mary’s KOA. It’s been a few years but it was one of the better-run KOAs we ever encountered, with a lot of amenities. For one thing, we were able to book one of the red “Jammer” antique bus tours of the Going to the Sun Road with pickup right in front of the KOA. Not sure what’s happening this season. They had good laundry facilities, a huge grass dog park with killer view, and unusually good fresh pizza for a campground.717Views0likes0CommentsRe: How many people put power awning in every night?
I remember chatting with a ranger at Devil’s Garden CG in Arches National Park. He stopped by mid-day when we were putting the (then-manual) awning in, since winds had started increasing, and said he wished everybody would bring theirs in before leaving the campground for the day. Apparently it was a fairly frequent occurrence that people returned to find damage. The push-button retraction we have now is so easy, there’s no reason not to put it in at night or when leaving the RV to go places. But we tend to stay just a few days maximum since we use the RV for touring and sightseeing rather than one-location vacations. We all camp in our own ways, and I know many people set up in one place for a week or months, using the awning like an auxiliary living room roof - left open to protect all the stuff placed underneath.382Views0likes0CommentsRe: Looking at Newfoundland for 2019
We just returned from our second visit to NL. I disagree that it is the same as the US as far as accessibility. As in the US, however, the most thorough accessibility features will be in a National Park like Gros Morne and in some provincial parks. In NL’s small towns where you’ll spend most of your time, you’ll find mixed features. For example, you may (or may not) find ramps or large restrooms and doorways. I noticed that campgrounds rarely have bathrooms with large stalls for people with disabilities. Paved paths and sidewalks are not the norm in small towns, but you often find them at some visitor-oriented places, such as lighthouses. We found that all the ferries (Marine Atlantic as well as local ferries to places like Fogo Island) had elevators. Important: When you arrive at Marine Atlantic in PAB or Argentia and check in at the entry gate in your RV, tell them why you need an elevator parking location belowdecks. They will give you a specially marked windshield card, and dock workers will direct you to a particular waiting lane pre-boarding for those who need easy elevator access. There will be a ramp to the elevator entry lobby. Otherwise, if you are in line with all other RVs, the tight vehicle spacing will make it difficult to use a scooter or power chair to reach the elevator. (You cannot remain in your vehicle on ferries.) Newfoundlanders are among the friendliest people on the planet. So make your needs known and they’ll be very helpful. By the way, the campgrounds we’ve used in those two provinces have been quite dog-friendly. Don’t recall any extra fees, and there have been poop bag dispensers in some places. Lots of trails for long walks. (Had a friend who encountered a no-dog campground elsewhere in Canada, but I’ve never seen that up in NS or NL.)516Views0likes0CommentsRe: Dog into Canada
We’ve made a few RV trips to that area and never been asked to produce anything in the way of paperwork or food, though we’d be glad to if asked. Our Labrador dog is usually getting a good look at the inspector - they know she’s on board. One caution is that the Newfoundland ferry from Nova Scotia (5 or 6 hours for shortest one) means your dog will have to stay in the RV unattended during the crossing. So you’ll want to be confident the dog can handle that. The other option is the kennel room for an extra fee. We’ve seen it, and it’s not a very happy place for a typical dog. Newfoundlanders are an incredibly friendly bunch, and it’s one of the most scenic places in North America, with vast open spaces and countless miles of dramatic coastal scenery. This summer, we camped on a beach at Fogo Island, and on a bluff overlooking the sea in La Scie, both with electric hookups for a small fraction of the cost you’d pay if you could find such campgrounds in the US. It’s surprising how few U.S. plates we’ve seen this summer up here. I guess the high cost of the ferry scares people off.267Views0likes0Comments
