I have a friend who lives near Salem, Or. and he tandems all over the place, Washington, Idaho, Montana, California, Nevada,Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas that I can vouch for for the past ten years. He has never been stopped, questioned or had any bad experiences. A former California Highway patrolman two weeks ago told me that even where it is illegal, the highway police ignore the practice. They are not familiar with laws that are under the jurisdiction of the state DOT is what he claimed, so even if they see you they leave you alone. Reading these boards it is rare you ever hear a member say they were hassled for tandem towing. Anyway, I would go the small trailer route if I were you. I have thought about the same myself and will stop by a welding and fab shop to see about getting the hitch system installed this summer.Re: Landing Gear Motor Fail and It's not the FuseIt sounds like you have a loose ground or loose lead or corroded connections. I'm glad we headed to the Northwest when we did, it was supposed to break all heat records back home in Nevada this week. Good luck with that heat...lol.Re: Trade-in not worth muchThe dealer knows how much profit he is willing to sacrifice when dealing with trade-ins. He has to cleanup and prepare the trade-in for resale, advertise it, pay a commission when it's sold and etc. So he looks at it as ACV Actual Cash Value when figuring the profit margin of the rig you are buying. As far as LaMesa of Tucson goes, I have first hand experience with them. We bought our new Winnebago Vectra from them, the rig we had prior to going with the Montana. The service work was horrible. We had the list of things that needed repaired as all new units have. And we set appointments, often having to leave the unit there for days on end. When we would get it back the things were not fixed or not fixed right. This was upsetting and when we took it in the last time, I discovered in the electric bay a number of wire bundles and wires just laying in the bottom not secured. We called Winnebago and had to drive to Forest City, Iowa, to the factory, to get the warranty items fixed. I realize this comment has nothing to do with your trade in question, but feel obligated to pass on to those I find out are dealing with that dealer and location what our experience was. Now I can sleep better tonight. Buyer beware.Re: What is the life expectancy of the 5th wheel Camper0414 wrote: More Information! We have a Keystone Laredo 5th Wheel 2005 that is 8 years old. We had a crack in the pin box above the welds and when they pulled down the skin they found a few other cracks. Keystone claims this is not a manufacture defect and our insurance states it was not a sudden issue so no coverage. They have labeled it a Manufacture failure and that can happen with a rig as old as ours. They claim 8 years is an old rig. They questioned how long we thought a rig should last. Our rig is in Great condition and we love every inch of the rig. The only issue we have is we have lost some of the exterior graphic from time in the elements. Maybe Keystone should be up front with the financial institutions and tell them that their rigs should not be expected to last longer than eight years...therefore a bank shouldn't carry a note longer than, say, 48 months. lol. What they are doing is shirking their responsibility.Re: maiden voyageI had a similar experience with towing. I thought it would be harder than it was. Now go out and have some fun.Re: Inverter issue, we need some power for dry campingThank's a million guys for all the feed back and suggestions. This is what I did after listening to you. I went to Interstate battery and bought two 6 volt batteries, a heavy duty battery box, and the salesman made me a 2 awg jumper cable to jump from the neg. terminal on one battery to the positive terminal on the other. Total cost at that point about $350. Harbor Freight was running an ad for inverters. Originally I was going with a 2000 watt model from another company with PSW. After reading the posts here and the reviews elsewhere, I decided to go with a 750 watt MSW from Harbor Freight. The sale price plus the additional 20% off coupon set me back about $40 for the inverter. I set up the battery box and batteries in the pass through storage near the laundry shoot that has an access door on the steps to the bedroom. This set up is about as uncomplicated as it comes. After hooking the inverter to the batteries via the alligator clamps supplied, I plugged in a shop light and turned on the inverter. It worked. I then took an extension cord and ran the cord from the inverter through the laundry shoot, along the edge of the kitchen cabinets to the entertainment center. I plugged a six way circuit protector I use for the lap top into the extension cord. I then plugged the XBOX 360 and the 32" Vizio LCD Tv into the system. Both turned on and worked as if they had been plugged into a normal 115V source. I ran the game box and TV for 90 minutes and all was well. I then disconnected everything from the batteries and inside the 5'er and hooked up the battery charger to the batteries for the initial charge. I did not check the charge on the battery prior to using it and have no idea whether it came fully charged or not. My set up at this point is right at $400. If this works as I think it will, it won't be long before it pays for itself in saved propane use. At some point I thought I might try to figure out how to wire this inverter into the 5'er itself which would then send power to the entertainment center plug in's. Granted, this is a very crude set up but it worked. I figure later on if I need more power I will add two more golf cart batteries to the bank.Inverter issue, we need some power for dry campingI'm grappling with a problem in need of a solution. For some reason the person who originally ordered our 5er chose not to include an inverter. We do have a propane powered genset and one battery for 12V operation. Why is this an issue? We travel for months at a time, on this current trip we won't be home until October. But even for shorter trips we don't spend every night plugged into an RV park. We like to pull over when we want and spend many nights at Wal-Mart or other such parking lots. And we like to watch TV and play games, and be able to enjoy the creature comforts without resorting to turning on the genset. Running that genset consumes a lot of propane and I mean a lot. We went through 14 gallons in a matter of a few hours and not only is it a pain in the you know what to chase propane for a refill but it's not free either. I realize I'm rambling here but I wanted to put our story out there when asking for solutions. I'm thinking of buying one of the Harbor Freight 700 watt inverters, it comes with battery cables for clamping on the battery. Running an extension cord from the inverter which would be located in the front genset area to a window, and plugging in the TV/XBOX/DVD player and using the cigarette plug to charge the cell phones and such. Others I have talked to suggest a 1000-1500 inverter. And still others a 2000 to 3000 watt inverter. However, we would need a professional install,a bank of expensive batteries, and we would eat up storage area for the battery bank. The added inverter power would possibly run the coffee pot and microwave but again, at what cost? A pot of coffee brewing would suck up much of the battery charge as would warming something in the microwave. Plus we can warm or make coffee on the stove. So I hope you see where I'm at and I have a feeling others out there are in the same boat. What have you done or what do you suggest we do?Re: Installing hitch/cargo carrier to back of 5erI was thinking about do this too but when I looked at the back of my Montana, I couldn't see where a hitch and mounting hardware could be attached to a frame.Re: RV TotaledThat must have been a big pothole. It sounds like you don't have a replacement cost rider on your policy. Research the value and then approach the insurer with the facts, they will probably try screwing you anyway.Re: Running frig while drivingWe leave our on while traveling. It switches between propane and 110 as needed.
