They'd rather go camping than anything else, except maybe going to a hotel with a waterpark... that trumps everything. We hooked the camper up this weekend to move it for winterizing, the kids got all excited that we were going out. Sorry sports, nope. Mine would be crushed if we went camping without them. I'd say more than half the fun of going (for us) is hanging out with the kids. If dh and I went alone we'd probably just sit and stare at other campers. Heeeeey... now there's an idea. :BRe: Deadwood,SD areaOur local newspaper just ran an article about how 3 folks from central MN were over rock picking in the Hills when the storm hit. They had a fully stocked RV, rigged out with a generator and full fresh water tanks. They said while the winds made things interesting, they were otherwise quite comfortable inside.Walk-up onlyHubby and I love taking our kids camping in the fall. However, there seem to be an abundance of state parks/ COE cg's that are "walk up only". We have one park nearby that is stringent with the rule that you have to be there with your camper on Fridays to claim a spot. Others are more relaxed, you can call in to reserve a same-day spot. Do any of you run into this and are there strategies? I would hate to drive 1+ hours to a park just to find out it's full.Re: Winter mouse preventionWe just had our first mouse encounter this summer. Little bugger made his nest in my handtowels and pooped all over the dryer sheets. My faith in that method is shot. We set out the capture traps (all in one, don't have to touch the durn thing). Three days later we had a very chubby mouse in a trap.Re: Helpful Smartphone AppsWe also do the leveler app, ours is called iHandy Level for iphone. I'll say that it's pretty funny watching people see us set our phone on the camper. They look and then look again. It's a pretty accurate bugger too! We also use The Weather Channel app for radar, though when the storm actually hits, nothing beats the good ol' weather band radio that hubby keeps good batteries in. At times we've also used the iphone for him to hear my directions on backing in. Speakerphone keeps me from hollering at him. :WRe: Rust-Oleum NeverWet - new productWe sprayed one of our folding camp chairs with it. Now it can sit out in the rain and with a quick tip, it's dry as a bone. And it worked well. One can did one chair. Wasn't terribly expensive through Home Depot.Re: Did you name your RV?We don't have a cool name yet for our Coachman Catalina. Our TV is a Tahoe, ergo it's called the "Ho". We call the GPS "Jeepus". On more than one occasion I've cracked us up saying "oh nice Jeepus lady pleeeease find this Ho a route home!"Re: Best bunkhouse under 30ftCheck out the Lance camper. If there was a dealer anywhere remotely around here, I'd trade my rig in for this one! http://www.lancecamper.com/lance-2185-travel-trailer-main.phpRe: Any 4th of July camp experiences? We had a neighbor arrive w/ a popup, a passel of kids and 4 adults. The dad begins hooting and hollering about how he's a MAN AND DOESN'T NEED DIRECTIONS OR HELP. oooook. So mom starts about making lunch for the kiddies while the other two adults break out books and become oblivious to their crew. Mom mentions needing a knife 1800 times, but can't get a knife because it's in the camper which dad still hasn't successfully popped up yet. After the 1801st mention, I bring over a knife because otherwise I'm about to use it for something other than cutting produce. ;) They proceeded to argue and fight the entire weekend. Blissfully, we had a full agenda of sightseeing already planned, so we didn't have to listen to a whole lot of it.Re: What are your fun family activites while camping? My kids are young (7 and 2). They love looking for frogs, playing at the playgrounds (a necessity for us) and generally puddling around outside. Every evening we camp, we go for a walk around the cg just after supper. The kids get a big kick out of seeing the other rigs and waving.
