Just do a Google search "lean backfire" Watch and learn Thats a nice elementary explanation of some causes of backfire (as the presenter states). However, YOU said that fuel will not cause a backfire. Wrong. Many sites out there for you to 'read and learn' ;) Let me help you. http://www.2carpros.com/articles/what-is-an-engine-backfire http://answers.edmunds.com/question-What-causes-a-backfire-166518.aspx Most of the following came from fordfestive.com - Possible casue of Backfiring Backfiring can be casued by the following: Internal carburetor problems (on initial WOT acceleration, this can be caused by a defective accelerator pump). Weak or broken valve spring (Usually severe. When it is exhaust, backfire will occur in the intake) Low compression Cam to crank timing off (rare, usually result in hard/no start condition) Burnt/damaged valves or seats (sever usually) Worn cam lobes (lack of power, can be severe backfire, often through carb) One or more valves adjusted too tight (heard through carb then intake is usually too tight, heard through exhaust then exhaust is too tight) Preignition (caused by deposits or lean engine conditions) Water in fuel Need more?Re: 1995 P30 backfiring thru intake when hot 2bzy2c wrote: Backfiring is NOT fuel related. Just dad and I in the driveway, probably 3 hrs to drop it out. Around 5 hrs to install, was the hottest day of the year so far! That was without all the correct shop tools. A shop should be much quicker.Re: adding a transmission temp gauge on P30 chassisI put my sensor in the pan. Best to weld the adapter to the pan, or at least use lock tite on the nut. http://www.classicwinnebagos.com/forum/index.php/topic,9139.msg52532.html#msg52532Re: Over Drive 2oldman wrote: cncsparky wrote: On a 100 gallon trip, would save about $50 @ $3.50/gallon. Is my math close? Ya, provided every single mile was driven in OD. 8mpg is an average over the entire trip/tank of gas.Re: Over DriveI get about 7mpg. If I added an OD transmission, would 8mpg may be out of the question? That is a %14 increase in mileage. On a 100 gallon trip, would save about $50 @ $3.50/gallon. Is my math close? Like someone said, another benefit would be less engine wear and lower noise.Re: A tachometer in a P-30 Daveinet wrote: I think 2002 and later 2500. The 85 is rated for a higher load than the 4L80E. Dave, do you have any info or a link to your swap? I'm looking into the same, but have not figured out how to handle the parking brake on the back of the tranny. Will the TH400 park brake bolt up to a 4L80/85E that had one from the factory?Re: 1984 P30 454 Shredding Alternator Belt turbojimmy wrote: cncsparky wrote: I ended up using a mid mount alternator bracket. Much smaller belt and so far no problems. Part number 225R I like that! I don't have access from the front. How hard is it to get at the alternator down there? There's a solenoid mounted on the stock bracket that I can relocate. What belt do you use with that? Jimmy, I dont think it would be too difficult. I did mine while the radiator was out, however. Here is a link to my blog, in it you can find part numbers and other modifications. http://www.classicwinnebagos.com/forum/index.php/topic,9139.msg48344.html#msg48344Re: 1984 P30 454 Shredding Alternator BeltAfter removing my smog pumps, the alternator belt by itself became too long IMO. I ended up using a mid mount alternator bracket. Much smaller belt and so far no problems. Part number 225R http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/Big_Block_Long_Pump.htmRe: starts fine, smooth idle 30secs, rough idle, then diesI've had these symptoms several times with fuel injected vehicles. If it is TBI fuel injection, the TBI unit needs to be removed and cleaned. Clean the idle air circuit and the butterfly, they are probably gunk'd up. Use throttle body cleaner and lots of rags. Remove the IAC valve and clean the pintle. Probably plenty of youtube videos to watch if unfamiliar. Install throttle body with new gasket. While it is apart, clean the mass airflow sensor MAF (if equipped) with spray electronic cleaner, both cleaners available at most auto parts stores.
