I slowed to about 15-20mph as the first one ran across. The second one hesitated and then ran right in front of me. As I slammed to a stop, it was jumping as I scooped it up the hood, over the windshield and roof. I looked into the rear view mirror just in time to see it falling into the pickup box. It stood up, jumped out and ran off. Scratched the hood, put a finger sized dimple in the front of the fender and dented the roof. A coworker of mine ran out of gas once, not long after running over a deer carcass. It turns out the antler punctured his tank. Recently near here a guy driving an Avalanche hit a herd of elk crossing the highway early in the morning. 11 dead elk (I think some had to be out down) and the guy was fine! Elk are not small animals. The wildlife department salvaged the meat. Link. I love the last line in the story that you linked: "The crash caused delays on the highway." Really???Re: Odd things that Happen when on the Road AJR wrote: A number of years ago I am diving down a country road in my Superformance replica of a 1965 AC Cobra I see some wild turkeys feeding on the left side of the road. So I slow to about 20mph. A group like that will normally just stare at you. But they are turkeys so you never know. As I am half way past them I see one bird charge the car. I heard the thump right behind me. In the mirror the turkey is flopping on the road. It gets up shakes its feathers, puffs out its chest and starts strutting back to the group. I could just hear it saying “See how brave I am?” I thought it was only a mongoose that would attack a Cobra. (Maybe the turkey could spot that it was a replica.)Re: Highway signs Mr.Mark wrote: I wish Walmart would advertise on those signs. Sometimes, we like to stop for lunch as we know that we will fit. And sometimes, we need to replenish our supplies! When traveling from small town to small town, Walmart is the only game in town that we can fit into. We have past many-a-Walmart because we saw them AFTER the exit! MM. I've never seen Wal-Mart advertise on them, but I frequently see a Murphy USA gas station, which is a pretty good indicator of a Wal-Mart location.Re: Coach-Net Road Side Assistance -- Are you unhappy? In nearly 15 years, Coach-Net has always come through in spades when we've needed them.Re: James Island Campground Best Road InThe only problem with Central Park can be the left turn onto Riverland, where the park is located. Take a look at going a little further east on Folly Road and turning right on Griffith Parkway, at the light by Wal-Mart. That will dead-end at Riverland. Make a right on Riverland and go just past Camp Road to the park. You can also, of course, go south (right)on Maybank from Folly (just over the drawbridge on the Wappoo Cut) and turn left on Riverland at the traffic light by the golf course.Re: Hilton Head to Myrtle Beach kohldad wrote: Easy, take 17 to Charleston, then the right lane to I526, then follow signs for Georgetown which will put you back on 17. About 7 lights coming into town and about 8 more going out of town. Shortly after you cross the bridge in Georgetown, you will make a right hand turn. As you make the turn, move to the left lane so you don't have to worry about the trees close to the edge of the road. Once you hit the open after about 8 blocks, you can then move to the right lane. 17 is only a tad bit slower if I95 is free flowing. One traffic jam on I95 makes 17 faster. This is the route that I'd recommend as well, although 95 north to pick up 17 MIGHT be a little faster, then Kohldad's route to and around Charleston.Re: Mystery bathroom switchQuit playing with the darn switch! My lights keep going on and off. :WRe: Anyone stay at St Louis RV Park LynnandCarol wrote: Assume you are inquiring about the RV park at the casino near down town St. Louis (??). No reason for any security concerns, as it has security and is a nice short term park. It is also near metro-link which is a train that will take you right into St. Louis for touring. We have never stayed there, but have visited the casino and RV park. We used to live nearby in Alton, IL. Places to visit in the St. Louis- The old capitol building downtown, St. Louis Zoo, Art museum, Arch, and Budweiser brewery. Enjoy! These are all great places to visit, except that there is no old capitol building downtown. You're probably thinking of the Old Courthouse, the white building with the green dome just west of the Arch grounds. It's a spectacular building, but not a formal capitol. It's the site where the original Dred Scott case was decided. There is a former state capitol on historic Main Street in St. Charles, about 25 miles west of downtown St. Louis. St. Charles was the state capital (as opposed to capitol, which is a building) before the capital was moved to Jefferson City.Re: Missouri to Charlottesville VirginiaIt's probably too late to help the OP, but if you take I-65 south about 3-4 miles from I-64 you'll get to the Kentucky Convention Center and the old Six Flags amusement park. On the south lot there is camping available. It's just a glorified parking lot, but it has FHU spots. I saw recently that the amusement is being rehabbed and will re-open, so I don't know how long the sites will be there. We've used them when attending the RVIA dealer show at the convention center. You'll get some noise from the airport around 2-4 a.m. when the UPS fleet is coming and going, but otherwise it's OK.Re: Campground around GadsdenIf you're looking at going late next week, between October 15-18, Noccalua Falls is pretty much fully booked for a FROG (Forest River Owners' Group) Rally.
