I bought the Lance over-cab strut brackets Part # DS314 as Lance suggested for my truck. I asked for any available pictures showing the installation of them. Lance indicated they will come with detailed installation instructions. I already have the proper 30.5 inch long struts from the previous owner and my 2005 Lance 1181 has the brackets already mounted on the over-cab for the previous owner's mid 2000's 3500 GMC. I have watched a video of installing the strut brackets overtop of the hood hinges on a ford 250. The instructions from Lance which came with the package of hood brackets leaves much to be desired and did not include any pictures. Instructions are as follow: 1. Remove both inner fender weather seals. No explanation is provided as to why and any videos on web sites do not show them being removed. I am assuming this means the front inner fender wheel covers? 2. Remove both cowling end caps. I am assuming these are the plastic caps that fit (fill-in) between top of fender, the window edge and truck hood? That makes sense and I have removed them to look at the exposed hood hinge. 3. Remove radio antenna. - No explanation is provided and I assume it is the antenna mounted on the passenger truck fender and it does not suggest to reinstall it? 4. Remove driver side hood hinge bolts (save). Procedure requires two people. - This is pretty straight forward. 5. Install driver side bracket with saved bolts. Position bracket to achieve greatest distance between bracket and fender. Repeat on passenger side. - I am not sure what this means however holes in bracket appear very slightly oval shaped in a perpendicular direction upon close inspection? 6. Trim cowling end caps to accommodate brackets. - No picture is provided however it is assumed cowling end caps can be made to fit again (just keep on trimming away until it does)? 7. Reinstall end caps and seals? - Again I am assuming the seals mean the inner fender covers? Is there anyone who could provide me with better instructions and/or pictures which are specific for my 2015 3500 GMC truck? Thanks christlRe: Palomino Doors mkirsch wrote: Nice! I'll look into that next spring. Your Palomino must've been a newer model, because mine has a hinged wood panel instead of canvas for the back wall. Mine was actually a 2012 model 1251SB bought in 2011. I noticed that change and always wondered why it was made and just thought it was a least expensive and lighter way to make the back wall. cheersRe: Palomino DoorsHi Folks: This maybe was one of my retirement moments and took the pictures but did not post them showing the solution. I found out that all the water coming off the roof on my Bronco and over the door area during a heavy rain exceeded the capacity of the OME drip ledge trim Palomino uses. This water then starts to run down the door crossing the top edge of the door and wicks inside and runs down the inside of the door and onto the floor in front of the door (I watched it). The solution was to add a larger "u" shaped drip ledge to existing door trim to channel the water to both sides of the door. It has never leaked since on real heavy rains. Make sure the vertical seals on the door are good and the bottom of the door opening in the corners is caulked. See pictures of aluminum trim added to top of door trim by just attaching it using a continuous bead of Proflex RV caulking. cheers Re: Palomino DoorsDo a search to find out my easy solution to stopping the door from leaking when top is up and the reason it leaks without this fix. Pictures were included. CheersRe: Storing Truck Camper Outside MN Ben wrote: Why do you have the jacks on bricks? Is your truck lifted? I did not feel comfortable with having bottom of TC so close to the ground (in 2-3ft of snow) with the corner jacks retracted during winter storage but still like the added stability you get from having jacks retracted as much as possible. I therefore placed the jacks on "solid" concrete blocks two courses high to keep TC >16" off ground with jacks retracted. In addition the TC is partially supported by a 6x6 square timber across the back and 8 concrete blocks under the front so the corner jacks do not carry all the weight all winter. cheers everyoneRe: Storing Truck Camper OutsideHi Folks: Taking various ideas from everyone that commented previously I wish to share how I ended up covering my Lance 1181 for outside winter storage. I used two aluminum saw horses which are 3ft high by 3ft wide and are rated for 300lbs load. The saw horse legs sit on 1/2 inch plywood and support a ridge beam composed of two 2x6 each 10ft long joined together in the middle. The ridge beam is held on edge by four metal "L" brackets fastened on each saw horse. I used coffee cans at each end of the ridge beam to protect the tarp and allow me to draw it tight over the ends of the ridge beam. The tarp is an old cover from a 10ft x 20ft Shelterlogic portable garage I had. The 3ft high saw horses provided a slope on the cover tarp of close to 1:1 and therefore I do not believe there will be any significant snow or ice accumulation on the tarp during the winter. Both ends of the tarp are open to allow good circulation of air while keeping any snow and rain off the TC roof. I am able to keep one of the air vent fans open a crack in the TC to allow any moist air to escape. In addition I put containers of DampRid in the TC as an added precaution. See pictures to help explain. I will be checking the TC interior every couple of weeks during the winter. Re: Crown Designed Into Chev and GMC Truck BedsHi Folks: Thanks everyone for your comments. I will report on this in the spring when I get loaded and mobile. Likely will have the Lance over-cap struts installed by then also and will try it with and without them in place. cheersRe: Slideout awning thoughts/recommendationsIMOP if you can remove any one of the awnings and recaulk and re-intall it then you should have no problem installing a new awning. I would not let anyone install an awning on my rig unless i could watch them do it. CheersRe: Use TC without battery installedHi Everyone: Thanks for responding. Information was helpful. Reason why I asked question is that I wanted to use the jacks but had already taken out the battery for winter storage. I found it in my manual finally that it indicates do not use jacks without good 12volt battery installed (120volt shore power is not acceptable - converter will over heat). There are to may cautions and I will not take the chance. Its not that much trouble to re-install the battery. cheers Christl
