There are plenty of potholes on the 40 can can do tire damage at least. Sorry, I cannot offer an alternate, the highways are all experience differed maintenance. Just take it easy and be careful. Places we enjoyed stopping: USA RV park, Gallup, American RV in Albuquerque, Circle of Pines KOA in Williams. EnjoyRe: Hwy 99 to Stockton instead of the 5Both are in California and suffer from deferred maintanance. The 99 gives you different scenery. My only hesitation with the 99 is that you pass through more towns, which means you have more situations of merging traffic. Both routes work, and we often switch just to change things up. EnjoyRe: Late check outIn my years of vacation travel we occasionally ask for a late check out. Often we are asked to pay an additional fee, sometimes we have been asked to relocate to open our spot for others. When I know I want a late check out, like in Las Vegas, where we prefer to drive home in the evening, I will just pay for the extra day and leave after dinner. JMHORe: Camping near Flagstaff AZCircle of Pines KOA, Williams, 15 minutes out.Re: Traveling while on DialysisYou guys have got it together. I only hope and pray that if and when we reach that situation we will be able to accomplish the ability to fully enjoy what is given us. My best to you both, Enjoy.Re: Traveling while on DialysisI was looking into this when my wife was bordering on dialysis, thankfully her kidney responded enough to keep her on a watch program. Maintaining a reasonably sterile environment to satisfy your clinic might be problematic. I would not rely on campgrounds to accept your shipments unless a relationship has been previously established, many campgrounds do not regularly accept guests shipments. Perhaps finding clinics in locations would be a better idea and make advanced arrangements to receive fluids. In the past, we traveled with Grandma who required regular chemotherapy infusions. We toured from Los Angeles to South Dakota and back, with advanced reservations at area hospitals, including a letter sent in advance by the Oncologist our 6 week travel was completed without a hitch. My best to you and yours. There are also a few Facebook groups offering conversation and support to dialysis patients.Re: St. George UTA bit up the hill, but Hurrican/St.George KOA is beautiful. Stayed twice and plan to return.Re: Car braking unit?I have and like ReadyBrake, I use it with my Demco tow bar.Re: Replacement furnitureWhen I had my sofa reupholstered the service center took out the drivers window to bring in the furniture.Re: CA to WA questionsI know you prefer State parks, I have always found them hard to plan for, so I will offer a few private sites we visited this summer with the 9 year old grandtwins. Benbow Valley KOA in Garberville will wonderful. Large spots, a golf course next door (I don't play) but it meant no airport/train/etc. Minutes from the Redwoods. Along the Oregon coast, Gold Beach is great. We stayed at Turtle Rock RV. Rustic but large and lovely, with plenty of places to run or hike. Gold Beach has the speed boats up the river, and plenty of fishing, you can cast from the campground. Loved the Olympic Peninsular, spent a day at the State Park just hiking (walking), beautiful, we again stayed at Port Angeles KOA, a newly refurbished KOA that was great and many improvements were in progress. We stayed at the Seattle/Tacoma KOA, crowded small but clean campground, but it is really one of the few games in town. Best part, it was only a couple of miles from the Boeing Museum and Skunk Works. This is not to be missed, more than just a flight museum, it is a well presented time capsule of avionics around the world. The kids loved it. Better than we expected. Like others say, Portland is just another dirty city. My youngest lived there for a year and returned to Los Angeles years ago. There is really not much for kids to see, just a city known for it's weirdness. Yes, they have VooDoo Donuts, but they are not really worth the hour wait in line. Not a place to drive the RV. The Columbia River Gorge, on the other had, is a great drive. Spend a couple of hours at the dam, where you can see the salmon jump up the ladders, and the hatcheries. Then there are miles of waterfalls along the way, best seen in a car, as parking is tight, but if your into walking the RV is OK, you will just have to walk back a lot. Up in that area there is a trout farm in the Troutdale area. Many acres with 9 large ponds, stocked with trout of various sizes. You get real fishing poles, and of course you pay for what you catch. However the prices were less than market price for trout, and they were beautiful delicious fish. Unlike some trout farms, these guys were not starving and going for an empty hook, the kids actually had to work a bit to catch 2 each. It is also a lovely park area, bring a picnic lunch, plenty of parking and an easy turnaround. Hope this helps, enjoy
