I have 1996 Silverado 4X4 5.7 vortec 85K original miles 3:73 gears, I tow my puma xle 18ft camper 4500 to 5000 all loaded up. I tow in 3rd gear 70mph at 2800 rpm and the truck loves it. Wouldn't trade it for a brand new Silverado I had 5.3 v8 truck and the towing torque of that motor was horrible so I sold it and bought the truck I have now from the original owner with 41K miles. I keep it very well maintained and I haven't had a single issue with it I get 9 to 10 mpg towing at 70mph if I bump it down to 65mph I get 11mpg.767Views0likes0CommentsHellwig helper springs on my 1996 silverado
I have a 1996 Silverado 1500 5.7 vortec V8, my camper is 3600lbs dry weight and I'm always filling the bed with fire wood and all our camp supplies is close to another 500 to 600 punds. So I'm towing about 4500lbs. I have a weight distribution hitch but I think all the bed weight is sagging the truck more than I would like so I ordered a set of Hellwig 990 helper springs, I was wondering if anybody had any experience with this brand or product that could tell me if they liked them or not. I'm glad this topic was brought up because I'm having the exact same issue with my new Puma xle 17qbc the hitch is set up almost dead level the factory tongue weight is 405pds I actually took by 30lb tank and slid it forward an extra 5 inches and I also loaded more in my front compartment. I also put 65 psi of air in the camper tires they only had 60 psi and after all that it seemed to help I think once I load the rest of are stuff it should be good.467Views0likes0Comments
