All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: VIDEO: TAG AXLE For Carrying Your Heavy Truck CamperI developed a tag axle several years ago. I built about 8 of them and all worked good. They were connected to the truck trailer hitch and were controlled with air bags so they could be raised or lowered at any time. I could transfer 2200lbs. to the axle without adding any weight to the front axle which is very important. The first one I made had a steering axle which worked well but was heavy and awkward to hook and unhook. By raising and lowering it tight corners and reversing were not a problem. The problem was when I went to sell them no insurance company would touch them. It seems that when you are altering the suspension on a vehicle it is to risky and some idiot will kill themself. I was told "imagine someone driving on a rainy night with no load and puts the axle down and takes the weight off the rear axle."Re: Road tripping for used TCsWhat we did was pack up some hand totes with bedding and many necessary items and tie them in the back of our truck and headed out to Washington state with the idea of staying in motels until we found what we wanted. There are dealers all along hwy 5. After 2 days looking we found what we wanted and wired the money from our bank. We then went shopping and stocked up on what else we needed and headed south along the coast for about 3 weeks and then back to Wisconsin. Great trip.Re: Auxiliary fuel tank and gravity vs electronic pumpI have several and I prefer a completely isolated system. I have a 4 hour bladder so stopping to spend 6 minutes to transfer fuel is no problem. The greatest advantage for me is it can be completely removed to haul large loads or place in a different truck.Re: Tag axle for truck camper rigsI have built several tag axles for pick up trucks and truck campers. Mine were designed so you could lift them off the ground or inflate the airbags and transfer 1800lbs to the tag axle without affecting the front axle weight, all with two switches on the dash. I patented the idea and presented it for manufacture. I soon learned that any time you modify the suspension of a vehicle the liability goes out of sight.Re: Do we have to winterize if we use our RV during the winter? For me the answer is always yes if there is any question. I have had frozen lines once and I am sure that drives my decisions. Not a fun time. Im sure that it will get cooler no matter where you live and as was mentioned it has more to do with how long rather then how cold. I am set up so I can winterize in about 5 minutes. Then when I dewinterize I save the antifreeze from the lines to use in the drains next time. By doing that I can winterize with only 1 gal of antifreeze. For me that is not worth the chance that it may freeze up.Re: Tips for people with back painI have added to my driving hours by adjusting the seat throughout the drive. For me changing pressure points makes a huge difference. I will not purchase a vehicle without a 6 way seat. Also I carry seat cushions that are different thicknesses to also change the pressure points. I also have had surgery and worked well for me.Re: Camping in the upper Peninsula of Michigan.Couple of ideas that have already been mentioned are mackinaw Island. I would put this on the list of must do. It is an all day place and if you can book a stay on the island, so much the better. We usually stay at Straits S P in St ingnace. Nice park. Then when in Escanaba Herford and Hops is good if you like craft beers but what was also mentioned is Stonehouse Restaurant and Lounge. All that I need to say on that is to get reservations even on a week day. Every time I have been in there it was packed, and was worth it.Re: Ark EncounterWe are going in about 3 weeks and plan on staying at Big Bone Lick St. park. Did a search on here and it got high reviews. Good luckRe: Two new Utah RV travel videosfollowingRe: Bad Lands/Black Hills/ Yellowstone VacationFollowing
