All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Camping in NebraskaTake time to visit the Arch over I-80 near Kearney if you are at all interested in history. It tells the story of the settling of the west, from the Oregon Trail days to the building of the Interstate System in a very high-tech, hands-on multi-media way. Especially good if you have kids. I taught 5th and 6th grade Social Studies for years. Would have loved to have been able to take my students to it for a field trip each year. Very well done. Plan on an hour or two.Re: Rear picture window model suggestionsWe have a Jayco Jay Flight 27RLS--Rear Living w/large Slide. We love it as it also has a big U-shaped dinette area, walk around queen bed and lots and lots of storage. More than I use----even on 3-4 month trips to Alaska! We pull it with a Ram 2500 Diesel. A good combination as it handles it with ease, even in the mountains. That said--we are considering going back to a 20-21 footer w/o a slide. We really like to get off the beaten path and use National Parks, Forest Service, State park campgrounds. So many of those in the west weren't made for anything much more than 21-22'. And, we are really road-trippers more than campers. WE don't go pull up next to a lake and sit for a week. We like to keep on the road every 2-3 days. It's just the two of us now--grand kids have all out grown Grandma and Grandpa and we aren't up to chasing after the Great Grand-kids. So smaller, simpler is more appealing to us. Think about how you camp---4-7 days in a spot or are you a road tripper? Do you stay in RV parks with plenty of room or do you like it a bit more remote. After three different travel trailers and one truck camper, we have discovered there really is no perfect rig that will fit all life stages and all budgets. Figure out what you really are comfortable with and then go for it.Re: Tips for Traveling with Other CouplesJust the kind of insight I was looking for. We have traveled 13-15 weeks at a stretch--but always just us. We tend to be pretty independent. Our friends have never owned any type of RV. They did take their grand kids to Black Hills, using a small tent and back of SUV, for about a week. I agree, separate spaces will be a must with perhaps even a few times when we go separate ways for a few days and then meet back up and share experiences and photos. There are some things that we can whole heartedly say---"Don't miss out on this or that"--but it doesn't mean we want to do it a second or third time. On the other hand, we can be a good resource as to what is available to do and see in any given area. We would be more than happy to make suggestions and recommendations---as we can always discover something else new to do on our "free" time. We look forward to sharing some of our favorite spots, but we want each couple to feel free to say "No" to going out to eat, sharing a meal, or visiting a specific attraction with no explanations needed and no hurt feelings. To each their own. More than anything else, I want to be sure we are still friends when we get home. Thanks for your tips and keep sending other thoughts or experiences our way,.Tips for Traveling with Other CouplesWe are considering making our 3rd trip to Alaska in 2020 and long-time friends, (who don't currently own an RV) mentioned they might like to buy an RV and tag along. We have had a travel trailer and road tripped for 20 years. We are excited by the opportunity to share some of our favorite places along the way with great friends. On the other hand, we want to be darn sure all of this togetherness doesn't strain a long time friendship. Any tips from others who have made long road-trips with other couples? Too much togetherness can even be hard on a successful marriage---let along just good friends. We want to do this and still be great friends when we get home!Easter Sierras Advice Needed--RV Parks and Sites to SeeWe plan to be headed south from the Lake Tahoe area by early Oct and need advice regarding good RV sites for a 30' TT with at least elec. but would prefer full hookups to use as a base for exploring the Eastern Sierras and the Eastern portion of Yosemite. Would like to find a place to stay for several days, explore Bodie, Mono Lake, maybe the June Lake area and make at least one day trip into Yosemite. After a few days we will continue south to Lone Pine and Alabama Hills area for a few days before heading into Death Valley on Oct. 15th. All suggestions regarding camping spots, as well as things to see and do, would be welcomed as this is our first time in this area. Will be driving a 4x4 Dodge Ram Diesel. Like to explore the back roads when we are not hooked to the TT.Soft Side Truck Campers in AlaskaWe are doing preliminary planning for 3rd trip to Alaska summer 2019. Seriously considering buying a Northstar Soft side truck camper and leaving our travel trailer at home. Should we be concerned about bears? We have always been in hardsided units when in bear country before. Thanks for your responses.South Texas Snow Birding--CG Info NeededConsidering a 30 day stay in Jan or Feb at least as far south as Corpus Christe. Is it possible to get a site t a reasonable quality place with less than 30 days advance reservations?Re: branson moJust spent four days there in late Aug. We have stayed at the RV Park owned by the city of Branson, right on the shores of Lake Taneycomo. Very nice. Lots of shade along the back side, but if you stay along the lake there is no shade. Very convenient to all of the Branson attractions. City tour trolley (free) stops in the campground. That said, we prefer staying at the Old 86 Corps of Engineer park south of Branson. Wonderful views of the lake, electric and water at almost all sites, all are paved and plenty big enough for most rigs. This location keeps you away from the hub bub of Branson and offers easy access to two of our favorite restaurants/spots in the area; The College of the Ozarks' dining room in the Keener Center and the Top of the Rock golf course, wonderful restaurants, and assorted resort activities. If you have additional questions, I will try to help you out.Remote Temperature MonitorsWe would like to spend a month or so in the south during the coming winter, but are quite concerned about loss of power at our home, or furnace failure--both of which would lead to frozen pipes and lots of other issues. What kind of remote temperature sensor/alarm do you use and what would you recommend? We want something that not only monitors temp in house and freezer, but is also capable of sending either a text message to alert us as well as our daughter. All suggestions will be appreciated.Re: Dodge City RV ParksThanks for your tips. Sounds like we don't need for than a 1/2 day in Dodge City. We will plan accordingly. I also have learned that their big annual celebration is going to be going on when we had planned to be there. We may just by pass it and miss the crowds.
