I-55. Hands down... Depending on where you're coming from, I-255 is what I've found is the the easiest/flattest way around traffic and downtown if coming on either I-55 or I-44. Well.... two people have already answered take the detour vs. the climb and another said it's a wash. One thing I've learned in 20 years here is never volunteer too much information when asking for advice. Saying things like "I really smoked my brakes in the mountains" is guaranteed to open yourself up to unsolicited advice. You didn't say if you were downshifting for those types of grades. You need to do that in the mountains. In 12 years of driving a gasser 30ft Class C, I never once smelled my brakes. OKC-AMA-ABQ-FLG-PHX is the most direct route. It's a 200-300 mile detour to go OKC-DFW-ELP-TUS-PHX, so that's really a choice of last resort with today's diesel and gas prices. I think I'd just be watching the weather forecast coming into both OKC and ABQ. Driving across Oklahoma and the Panhandle you may get ice depending on the month, which is far worse than snow. ABQ-FLG is where you'll hit snow. It's not as expensive to reroute ABQ-TCS-DEM-TUS-PHX, but it's still longer.945Views0likes0Comments
