We will hit above 80 this week!Re: Big Bend National Park - RV PARKSYes, like Texas--BBNP is large. I recommend that you expand your area of interest to include Big Bend Ranch State Park. Several years ago, we visited BBRSP and took a tour in one of their vehicles with a great driver to see the BBRSP including a waterfall deep in the park. It was an all day trip. I have not checked the BBRSP website to see it tours are still offerred. Fuel and food are limited in BBNP, so plan accordingly. Hope you enjoy your trip.Re: Grand CanyonDefinitely go to the Grand Canyon--either North or South. There is no other place on earth like it! We have been 4 times over the past 16 years. The north rim in 2007--with a 37 foot 5th wheel we stayed at a rustic RV Park near Jacobs Lake that is still there with full hookups. Yes it is 40 miles to the North Rim one way--we did it several days. We also got a NF map of the area and drove on NF roads to the rim--a really great experience with the September colors in the aspens. Next trip a few years later, we spent about 5 days on the south rim again in the fall. Helicopter trip across the canyon with a DVD of our flight with our voices on it. Great Ranger shows, campfires, stayed at the RV park on the South Rim. In 2016 we took a 6 day float trip for 188 miles thru the Grand Canyon. There is virtually no description of that trip--Western River Expeditions was our outfitter--all meals, water, tents, cots, bed rolls were provided along with river guides who knew the geology and history of the GC. The trip was just wonderful in August. We left our 5th wheel in Page, AZ. Last trip was in 2018, in September, and we stayed 2 nights at the Lodge on the North Rim. It was again wonderful. Tour buses arrived everyday for about 18 hour stay. The tour buses did not go to any overlook away from the Lodge. We went to the overlooks--along with about 4 other travelers! No crowds. We left our 5th wheel in Kanab on that trip and just drove out truck to the park. Any questions, send we a message.Re: How to see grand canyonWe have been to both North and South Rims usually in the fall--Sept. Suggestions--hiking is great in Nat'l Forest on North Rim. No crowds due to most visitors are on tour buses that only stay 1 night at North Rim Lodge. And the big buses cannot drive to the overlooks--too big for road. South Rim good advice provided by others--add take a helicopter trip over the canyon. Or take a really great ride by going on a float trip thru the canyon, we did in 2016--188 miles, 5 nights. Left the rig at Page, Az for float trip.Re: Taos or Santa Fe, New MexicoWe go to Santa Fe and sometimes Taos every year for the past 8 years on our trip to Durango. Santa Fe Skies is our pick in Santa Fe. You might consider a day trip to Los Alamos to tour the mesa top city and its great museum. Also walking tours around downtown Santa Fe are really interesting. The mural in the City Gov't building is incredible and the walking tours take you there! Great food every where.Re: Albuquerque Rv campground? We drive west every summer and stay at the Bernalillo KOA for the past few years. Its location in the smaller community makes getting around easier and interesting sights around ABQ are nearby. If you stay, go by The Range for great New Mexican food--it is only a few blocks away. And Santa Fe is close by!Re: vallecito res. coloradoWe have been going to Vallecito for the past 5 years and staying at Blue Spruce RV Park--I recommend reservations. Further up the road is the NF campground. I would recommend reservations for it. There are several NF campground around the lake--check out internet for reservation info. There is great hiking up the Vallecito Creek and Pine River if you want to hike.Re: Grand Canyon RV parksLots of good advice, my wife and I (both retired since 2006) have been to the GC 4 times. My experience is to stay at Trailer Village on South Rim and use the shuttle. Attend Ranger programs and enjoy the information about the GC that is offered. Maybe geology, wildlife, and early explorers will get old quickly for a 12 year old. We have flown over the GC by helicopter and got the CD of our flight, rafted for 6 days thru the GC--the best and most expensive way, and stayed 2 different times on the North Rim, as you can see we had the time. With less time, then recommend 3-4 days on South Rim, drive around to the North Rim for 2 days and then head to National Parks in Utah.Re: Texas Hill Country IdeasGreat time to be in South Texas! For SA, I recommend staying in San Antonio for the visits to the Riverwalk, Missions, Market, Alamo, maybe even golf if you play. Others have given a good list of RV Parks--I would add Admirality near Sea World. For hill country, pick either Kerrville or Fredericksburg. In Kerrville, we like Buckhorn Lake RV Park. In Fredericksburg, visit the National Museum of the Pacific War, eat German sausage, and drive over to LBJ Ranch park. Maybe the wildflowers will be out but that is a bit iffy due to small amount of rain in the December-January period.Re: North Rim CampgroundWe have visited the GC four times--twice to the north rim, once to the south rim and a 188 miles float trip on the Colorado River thru the GC. We do like the area! For the north rim, we took our 5th wheel and stayed at a FHU park about 1 mile south of Jacobs Lake and took AZ 67 down to the North Rim. We also drove our truck only on forest service roads in the area to the North Rim -- great ride. All our trips have been in the fall except for the float trip in August. The weather was great.
