The first year we pulled it with a V6 RAV4. Had enough power, but though it was within the tow rating it didn' feel like the Rav was structurally up to the task for the long run. Now pull with the Tacoma. If we had a larger tow vehicle I would probably prefer a non-hybrid with a more accessible bed (have to crawl over the wife to get in/out whether we're in the tent or turtled and using the dinette.) Still like having a small trailer for ease of positioning and feeling like we're really camping. Often find that we're arriving at sites when the weather is wet, which means we stay turtled until it gets better. Have PUGS which help with keeping it warmer or cooler and should help with longevity of the tent.Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}Several years ago we lost our 4 year old Jake after fighting mega colon (failure of the large intestine to keep things moving, so everything accumulates there). Shortly thereafter, his "brother" Devin was having trouble with constipation. Probably unrelated, but we were paranoid. Our vet recommended using Miralax in his food. We use 1/8 teaspoon each day mixed in his wet food. (12# cat) If his stool seems to get soft or runny we cut back. So far it has worked well.Re: Flying with pets Jack_Diane_Freedom wrote: You will want to check that the cargo hold is pressurized, has oxygen and is heated. My daughter took her dog with her to Europe to live there for a couple of years and the connecting flight did not have a pressurized cargo. Caused quite a problem for a few days. I have a hard time seeing how the cargo hold would not be at the same pressure as the passenger compartment- it would actually be difficult to seal between the sections and create problems. Cylinders & spheres make good pressure vessels, Half-cylinders do not. That said, temperature differences could easily be a problem. In the 70's we flew our lab to & from Germany when my dad was stationed there. Didn't have any problems. However, his boss had 2 championship line Newf's that died on the plane when returning to the States. Presumably from cold. He was able to get some pups from the same lineage and had several of them drooling all over the place when we visited a few years later.Re: Ultra light TT brandsWe towed our Starcraft Launch 15FD (fiberglass version of the AR-1) with our 07 RAV4 for the first year. Had plenty of power with that V6, but felt like I was really pushing what that vehicle was able to comfortably handle. Gas mileage went from 26 normally down to about 11. Now tow with a Tacoma which feels much better. If you stay well under the overall and hitch weights, and go with an egg or popup to minimize wind resistance, you'll probably be ok. DonRe: RAV4 towing capacityWe did several trips pulling our Starcraft Launch 15FD with the 07 RAV4. That engine has a lot of HP (369 vs the 190 in my 01 Tacoma), so that wasn't' really the issue. It seemed, however, that the body just wasn't up to the stresses being put on it. Since the Tacoma was showing it's age, I managed to talk myself into getting a '14 Tacoma, which pulls it nicely. I'm kinda stuck in a rut -- went from a '90 Toyota pickup to an '01 Tacoma to a '14 Tacoma. 25 years and about 420K miles between the 3 trucks.Re: Frontline vs K9 AdvantixWe've used mostly Frontline on our Shepherd mix. Last year we tried Advantix a couple times, but both times within a minute after application he got nervous, panting and pacing for a couple hours. Doesn't have any problem with the Frontline. Have found a few dead ticks on the floor. Occasional tick crawling on him after a walk. Only a couple actually attached to him - not sure how long they would have stuck on him before the Frontline would take effect - none have been at all engorged. Have found more on myself than the dog this year.Re: What should I have done? -> Updated myredracer wrote: Maybe someone needs to sue an RV park big time to get them to change. I didn't get the impression that this happened at an. RV park. In any case, I'm not in favor of suing the park for the actions of irresponsible dog owners. That would result in parks becoming less dog friendly.Re: It finally happenedEdit: double postRe: It finally happenedI'm finding this to be a very interesting discussion. Our Shepherd/Chow/Golden?? mix is very social and loves the chance to meet and play with other dogs. We just spent the weekend at a very dog-friendly park ( Chocorua KOA in Tamworth, NH). I think the campers with dogs outnumbered those without. I need to work more with him more on not pulling, as his first reaction is to pull hard to try to meet the other dog. It's enlightening to see the viewpoints shown here. My experience has been that most dogs he meets are happy to meet him and the owners are generally fine with the meetings also. It's good to get a reminder that such meetings need to be consensual from both sides. I will generally try to initiate a greeting, as I know my guy loves it, but I always try to get some sort of positive vibe from the other owner & dog before letting him enter their space. I don't want to be one of "those" owners who tick everybody off.Re: New puppy - a few questionsWe typically use Frontline on our Shepherd mix. Tried Advantix Plus a couple times. Each time, within a minute or so of applying, he started pacing and acting agitated. This would last a couple hours. Back to Frontline and no problems.
