While the OP will be pushing his trucks limit for payload, if he loads wisely in the trailer, and truck, it should be an acceptable towing experience. Much of toy wt will be behind trailer axles, and this is not a real long trailer. I'd give it a go, if my truck/trailer. As always, a good WDH will make some difference too. Jerry This is my thinking also. I shouldn't have to have to explain how many people, how far I'm towing, what exactly I'm taking with me. I understand how payload works. Anyways here I go, Dr650 dual sport motorcycle 320 lbs, some fire wood, necessities in the camper 300 lbs(Yes 300 lbs because I have weighed it), 1 person 220 lbs, and my lucky rubber ducky. Not going to tell you where I'm going and not telling my favorite fishing spot either. I will say most trips are within 30 mi of home. If I load this weight behind the rear axle, wouldn't that be to my advantage?Re: Ideal hitch weight for 2020 RAMLots of assumptions here. I am simply asking what people with similar trucks are comfortable with as far as their hitch weight. I am more limited that you 3500 guys, but still lots of half ton towables out there.Ideal hitch weight for 2020 RAMI have a 2020 RAM 1500 with a payload of 1559 (sticker in door) and a max towing of 11,450 (entered vin on Ramtrucks.com) I like the Jayco Octane SL 222, but it has a hitch weignt of almost 800 lbs. What would be the ideal hitch weignt to look for to have a comfortable tow?Re: Towing without WD hitchClass IV hitches used as weight carrying are rated up to 10,000 lbs. gross trailer weight (GTW) with a 1000 lbs maximum trailer tongue weight (TW). Class IV hitches used for weight distributing are rated up to 14,000 lbs. gross trailer weight (GTW) with a 1400 lbs. Reese-Hitches.com › learning_center What are the different hitch classes? - Reese-Hitches.com | Trailer Hitches This is where I was getting my information from. Is it Incorrect?Re: Towing without WD hitch Huntindog wrote: samsontdog wrote: If it was me I would hitch up and take it home. I t will be empty. Back in the 50 and 60s we never had WD or the adjustably hitch head. I towed thousands of miles with no problems. I don't now No toy haulers back then. Big difference. An empty TH can have a super high TW... A buddy had one that was close to 2000# empty! That is asking a lot of the reciever and ball. But the TW is 790 lbs, not 2,000 lbs. Is 790 asking a lot of a Class IV hitch with a Husky WD? I sold the 2006 Duramax for a 2016 Cummins. Sold the Cummins for my current truck because I really liked the truck and though the TT days were behind me. The DW convinced me otherwise and here I am looking at 1/2 ton towable toy haulers.Re: Towing without WD hitchWell I was able to find a WD hitch and go get the camper. The owner failed to mention there was severe dry rot on all 4 tires, so I left it there and drove back home empty handed. Not the first time I've driven long distances to see a vehicle misrepresented. This is exactly why I purchased all of my previous campers new. I just don't have time for all of the wild goose chases.Re: Duramax won't prime. There's an o ring under the primer bulb that goes bad. It won't allow you to prime your fuel and won't let your truck to start. The o ring is $10 at your local auto parts store. Good luck.Towing without WD hitchI have a 2020 Ram 1500 with a max towing of 11,447 lbs and I'm looking to tow a 25ft toy hauler with a hitch weight of 790lbs and overall weight of 5,100 lbs. I found the camper about 125 mi away and I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. I didn't have a chance to pick up a WD hitch yet and I'm planning on towing the unit back tomorrow without one. I know it won't be fun and my truck will be squatting a good bit. Would loading a motorcycle in the trailer help with the tongue weight? Not looking for the weight police, just some that may have had experience with this similar set up and situation.Re: Ram 1500 towing... jerem0621 wrote: MFL wrote: I'm not familiar with Ram 1/2 tons, but even with the taller gearing, I'd expect more than 7,800 lbs towing, from a 5.7 hemi with 8-speed?? Payload 1200 lbs???...think my wife's little SUV (Escape) has a similar payload, and is the loaded Limited Edition. If Grit says it will work, I'd go for it!! Jerry Yea, I balk at that all day long. 1200 lbs in that Ram and you will hardly notice the load. 1200 lbs in the escape and you will know you are loaded heavy. My lightbulb moment came when I commented on here about a 3/4 ton MegaCab 4x4 Cummins only having 1800 lbs of payload. Someone commented that 1800 lbs in the bed wouldn’t even make it squat, despite what the silly sticker says. Just my opinion based on experience. Thanks! Jeremiah This might be for another thread, but here it goes. I went from an '06 Duramax with a payload of 2200 lbs to a 2016 Cummins with a 2000 lb payload. I towed the same fifth wheel with both and the Ram (with the lower payload) towed much more stable than the Duramax. I know the numbers are given for a reason, but why are Rams numbers so low?Re: Ram 1500 towing...I pulled the plastic cover off the engine to verify that there is a transmission cooler and I am wired for OEM brake controller. I know the engine will pull it, I know the trans will hunt, but I wasn't sure about the coil vs leaf springs.
