We have been in Jasper and Banff the past couple of weeks. The Canadian Rockies are indeed magnificant. We finally crossed over a couple of days ago into Idaho on hwy 95. That part of our trip has been fantastic but we are glad to be back in the good old USA. On our way to Mt Rushmore and the bad lands. Safe travels to all George and MaryRe: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......Hello, Want to thank you for all the inputs on the Cassier. Sorry it took so long to get back up with you but we have been without internet or in parks that have it but we where unable to connect. It is amazing how important our computors have become for comunications and information. Glaciergus, we will not be able to give any reports, though that was a great idea. My bride was not comfortable traveling on the Cassier with the info we had at the time. If one of us is not comfortable with anything we are about to do, we just do not do it. Sounds like it would have worked but! It is fine becuaue we have stopped at locations we thought looked interesting on the way up plus we will have something entirely fresh to do next trip. Again, thanks for all the info, this forum has been a great source of (in nautical jargon) local knowledge.Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......lizzie and fanrgs, Thanks for the information about the Cassier. We are not in a hurry and we have no problem slowing for the road conditions. We just illuminate the flashers and slow to a craw so others can pass when needed. Again, thank you for the info. I too feel better about using that route. glaciergus, hope to see you on the roadRe: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......I hear you CA Traveler, Hope things are well at home for you. We are in Whitehorse for the first time and enjoying it. We missed it going up because we cut down into Carcross and Skagway. We took the ferry over to Haines then drove up to Valdez. We took the ferry to Whittier. The tunnel was a thrill, never shared the road with a train before. We haven't traveled the Cassier yet so that is why we are looking at that route back to Prince George. We are debating now if we want to deal with the road conditions vs. the Alcan again. We do not remember that portion of the alcan being as bad as it sounds like the Cassier may be. We are a bit concerned our coach may go on strike if we beat it up much more, lol. All in all though, this has been a fantastic trip and we feel blessed to have been able to do it.Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......CA Traveler, Thanks for the heads up about the Cassier. Was dealing with the road worth the trip? We are thinking of heading South on it in another week or so. We are also thinking it may be a bit late to view the bears. We have seen many bears this trip, a couple of times closer then we wanted but seeing one fish has alluded us. This trip has been fantastic and we are already planning a return trip, however after traveling the upper yukon this past week we are also ready for some smoother roads. We wish everyone safe travels, bright skys and fair winds.Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......Hello all, it's been a while, we r in Valdez. Must be right behind u guys rickjf. We did the other cruise only because it was in our tours book. Well worth every penny as I am sure Lulu Belle is. Janetrupp thanks for the info about Pioneer in Whitehorse, we cut down to Skagway and ferry to Haines so will be stopping in Whitehorse on the way back in Sept. We really enjoyed both towns, stayed in Garden City at Skagway, nothing fancy but sites r level and u can wash rig in site. We stayed in Oceanside at Haines. Owners r great and the view is fantastic but it is very tight and we in countered our first caravan there, very interesting dynamics that we were ready to get away from. Here in Valdez we r in Bayside again nothing fancy but level sites that we can wash our rig in with a great view with eagles flying in front of our rig every afternoon. Oh! Not Mosquitos here yet, but I imagine they will come. Our next stop is Anchorage not sure where we r staying yet. Roads have been very interesting. We have slowed to 20mph for long stretches at times. The worst so far was from destruction bay to the AK border an again heading from Glenallen to Valdez, but they were not as bad as in the YT. Both descents into Skagway and Valdez have been worth the trip. The road into Skagway has been the most beautiful we have traveled. Heck, we even did the train ride to see it again. If u do the train u want to get the car behind the engine, that way on the way back u r in the last car with an unobstructed view. Also u want to be on the left side going out of Skagway, which I believe someone already addressed. Fuel, Haines, at Bigfoot was 4.76 for diesel and it was cheaper in Tok then in border city. We paid 4.59 at Youngs with discount coupon from road trip magazine, though all the stations where the same. We wish everyone safe travels, George and MaryRe: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......Danny, Northern Lights looked ok from the road, be mindfull of the location. There is only one sign right at the enterance and it is one of those signs that is hard to read until you r right on top of it. If you know the colors it will help. It is black with bright green and red text. Mile 0 RV is ok, level gravel site with intermittent wifi. Full hook ups which r all new. We r the first to use the services at this site. Some of the sites r not level but management is working on them. fanrgs thanks for the info. Yes we always wonder about the geology. Being flatlanders our whole lives, we r in total owe of the terrain. Wish well to all, George and MaryRe: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......Thanks for the heads up Gary, will be heading that way when we turn to the barn. We r now in Dawson Creek as well, we missed Northern Lights, saw it as we went by so ended up in Mile 0 RV. What a day full of firsts. We saw the Canadian Rockies for the first time, two black bears playing along the road, where was their moma! We had to stop for a moose and her calfs. Oh! something to think about for those traveling with dogs. Our dog started barking while we were stopped and we think it aggravated moma moose because it sure looked like she was contemplating attacking the side of our coach! We also hit our first frost heave, it was marked and we slowed down thank God. Now we see why they can cause so much damage. Regular gas was 1.359 in Chetwynd, not sure here in Dawson Creek yet. Take care, George and MaryRe: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......Hello all, hope everyone is doing well! We are currently in Prince George heading to Dawson Creek tomorrow. Will be looking for signs! Stayed at the Discovery Center in Williams Lake last night. They have 5 or 6 rv spots. paved, fairly level and about 75 feet long. Not sure how many meters that is! There is also wifi at the tables outside the building. Sign in to O/N at the info desk inside. We are currently at the Treasure Cove Casino, spots are not real level but paved and we can get wifi from the building in our coach. There are several RVs here. Fuel prices: May 18, Hope Flying J 1.269 diesel, 1.369 regular May 20, Cache Creek, Husky 1.349 regular May 20, Lac la Hacke,Husky, 1.359 regular May 20, Williams Creek,Super Gas,1.280 diesel 1.349 reg May 21, Prince George, Fly J 1.309 diesel 1.359 regular 69.9 propane Oh! The roads. They have been good so far. Not sure where to stay in Dawson Creek, looking at mile 0 rv or nothern lights. Any recomendations? George and MaryRe: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......Hello All, Just a quick update. We crossed over at Sumas this morning. No wait but the entry lanes are very tight for a big rig. Given the choice not sure we would do it again. Very smooth entry with some questioning. We are in Hope at Wild Rose RV, nice park with level site, decent wifi, cable and 30 amps, $36.90 total with Good Sam discount. We called yesterday and they had sites available, we were not sure with it being a holiday weekend. Traffic was light as well. Will keep you posted as we can and safe journeies to you'll, George and Mary
