Our son goes to college at MTU in Houghton, so we made many trips there taking him to/from school. We made the tour when we dropped him off for his 1st year in late Aug. Many years we had snow in the UP in the spring when we picked him up at the end of the year - as late as mid-May. Because of that many campgrounds were not open, or if they are, limited facilities (no water or the restrooms were closed) due to snow/cold. Our circle tour was great. Since we made it after Labor Day, hardly any crowds at all, and still warm. Bugs were not an issue at that time either. My brother did the trip in October, and he ran into CGs closing for end of season. Our favorite places on our trip - Gooseberry Falls SP in Minn, Sleeping Giant Provincial in Ontario, and Pukaskwa National Park on the North shore in Ontario. But we enjoyed all of our stops. You do need passport or a enhanced ID to cross the border. Also any pets need documents for vaccinations. At the Soo was the only place we were asked for info on our dogs for all the times we have crossed the border.Re: Upper PeninsulaWe make 2 trips a year to the UP to pick up our son at college in Houghton. For variety we stay at different campgrounds each time we go. We stayed at a private CG by Seney wildlife refuge. Had a great time, took a canoe trip, biked in Seney to see bald eagles, snow geese, trumpeter swans, etc. Not much else around it. We 2nd the city park just west of Munising. Close enough to town to see Pictured Rocks & other sites. Some sites on right on the water. There is a NF cg justt west of there also. Near Houghton we have stayed at the city park on the river/canal (no restrooms), Baraga before you get to town, McClain SP on the lake, further north at Ft Wilkins in Copper Harbor, along with Lake Michigan SF CG along US2, Straits SP in St Ignace (our preference for going to the island - less crowds), Indian Lake SP, Muskalonge SP, Soo Locks CG, and the casino in Christmas. McClain is nice due to the great views. Ft Wilkins is a long way from anything. In the Houghton area take a mine tour at Quincy. The Porkies are maybe 2 hours from Houghton. We are planning on going there this fall when we drop him off back at school. Another park not mentioned is Fayette on the south side on the shore of Lake Michigan. Neat old iron ghost town. Beautiful harbor. My recommendations on what to see - Pictured Rocks (take boat tour), Seney (drive, bike ride, or canoe), Kewanaw Pennisula & Copper Harbor, the big spring, Fayette, and the Porkies.Re: Waiting at the Rainbow BridgeToday we put to rest our Tabasco, nearly 13 years. Officially he was CH Hardwaood Tabasco, a Chesapeake Bay Retreiver. Be bought him as a puppy and he quickly won the hearts of our family. As he grew he began to show his wit, playfulness, and love of people. We showed him, where he quickly accelled, winning Best of Breed at Detroit. He loved to stand among the people, getting to know them as a crowd gather to pet him - and therefor he became a great ambassador for the breed. He camped with us from the time we brought him home. He loved to travel and stroll with us through the campgrounds and taking hikes. He knew when we were leaving soon as we packed the camper. He enjoyed to swim, hike, and sit by the campfire at night. He slept at our feet, which he only did when camping. He adored the kids, enjoying playing and swimming with them. He welcomed them home when they return from college even after many weeks gone. He welcomed in another Chessie into his home, and became best friends. He sired 2 litters and now many families enjoy the sweet & lovable traits that he had. Recently his health declined and it became difficult to walk due to a nerve disease, then suddenly he became totally immobile and we knew it was time. He went peacably this morning as we gently caressed him for those last moments with us.
