All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Dexter HD Suspension & EZ-Flex Install (long w/ pictures)I finished the EZ Flex install over the weekend. It ended up taking two days but I got my new Maxxis tires mounted along the way. The ball joint press made all the difference in the world. I'm not real sure how you could do the job without it or something similar. If anyone in the Spfld, IL area is looking to borrow one, I can hook you up. I ended up pressing several of the shackle bolts out and reorienting the grease holes horizontally. I also had one bolt that had two holes drilled in it at 90 deg angle...guess a manufacturing mistake. I hope it doeasn't come back to haunt me later. I took the 5er for a spin around town and would have to say it rides pretty well now. I also added a 5th Airborne pin box so that may be big part of the difference as well. Next issue I have to contend with is an axle flip. I tried mounting the leaf springs in the lowest mounts available but it didn't gain me near enough height at the rear. I ordered the flip kit from Dexter today along with a set of 4 upper shock mounts. Apparently I will have to weld on the new shock mounts and reuse my existing base plate (lower shock mount) on top of the springs. Dexter provided a drawing but it doesn't give much explanation. MarkRe: Dexter HD Suspension & EZ-Flex Install (long w/ pictures)For those who have installed the Dexter EZ-Flex kit - where eight of the wet bolts already pressed into four of the shackles right out of the box? If so, were the grease holes aligned horizontally? It appears somebody just threw mine together regardless of what the instructions said. I'm thinking I'll press all the bolts out and reinstall them prior to installing this kit this weekend. Also, one of the grease zerks on one of the equalizers was snapped off in shipping. I was able to remove the broken part with an EZ-out. But now the new zerk is pointed in the wrong direction. I'm afraid of snapping it off if I try to rotate it any more. Let's hope for some decent weather finally so I can get my 5er leveled up and ready to hit the road! MarkRe: Cool Mods - Thread restored 10/18/2012This weekend's project was finishing up the WD bar storage on the A frame. I welded two pieces of 1 1/2" heavy wall conduit to my bike rack supports. The greasy WD bars drop right in and then get padlocked to the safety chains. You can also see the new support bar for spare tire. Next up is to add a receiver tube to the A frame to hold the hitch assembly while at camp. I tried locking it in the ball socket but it still sticks out enough to bust a knee on. Spring is finally here and it's time to go Camp'n!!!!Re: Cool Mods - Thread restored 10/18/2012So here is one of my winter projects. It's an A-frame bike rack I built from materials I had lying around my shop and some cradles picked up at the local bike shop. I haven't given it a test ride yet so I can't comment on how it's going to work. I fear it may be too bouncy. I was carrying five bikes on my rear rack and they suffered alot of damage due to rubbing against one another. With this rack I can move the two adult bikes to the front and spread the kid bikes out a little more on the rear rack. This is actually the second rack I built as the first one was very boxy and quite ugly. I went back to the drawing board and came up with this idea. It's basically 3/4" heavy wall conduit bent and welded with a cross bar and some home fabricated mounts. I think I spent approx $23 on it incuding the paint and grade 8 bolts w/ lock nuts. There was a post yesterday about storing your weight dist bars and I may go back and incorporate something along the line of the "Bar Buddy" to hold them. I like their concept. This is how the rack mounts to the A-frame. Any comments would be appreciated. Happy Campn' :) (If the ice ever melts!!!)Re: Cool Mods - Thread restored 10/18/2012Thanks for the input LarryJM on my spare tire winch. I actually do have the spare cable-locked in place as well. I had heard several horror stories about the damage that can be done by the spare tire if it should come loose. One of my winter projects is to add an even better tire retainer lock. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.Re: Cool Mods - Thread restored 10/18/2012Hey mike, this looks familiar - I didn't use the foam blocks but was amazed at how much quieter the pump is with just adding the flexible water lines. Keep the mods coming...Re: Cool Mods - Thread restored 10/18/2012Thanks to RVSnowbird and Pulsar, I think I can post some pics now. I had to move my spare tire to the TT passthru when I built my rear bike rack. Since it ate up too much space I went with a new plan. A friend acquired a Ford spare tire winch from an old truck and I cleaned it up. welded in some angle irons and now I have: While I was in the area I added abattery cutoff switch Hopefully, more to come!
