I'll take all the information into consideration when I'm mapping it all out... Rjxj, and wclement1248, no we have never been to palo duro.. But I have seen some really great pictures of it.. Beautiful! I'll take a look at making it a pit stop :) thank you !Houston to ColoradoHowdy All!... We're back at it again this year.. We took a year off in 2014 and had another baby to add to our clan, and we're ready to hit the roads again as weekend warriors and short vacation, country-land travelers. Being the Co-Pilot and navigator of all trips, I need some advice. My family and I are preparing for another trip from Houston to Colorado, Little bit north of Denver. I know that the most tracked road from here to there is through Amarillo, but has anyone taken hwy through Dallas and OK? We did the road through Amarillo a couple years ago and it seemed unmaintained (bumpy), although the kids enjoyed the stop at Big Tex! Also, We had stayed at St.Vrain's State Park while we were there last, but wanted to try something new. Anyone have experience with others in that area, such as Prospect RV Park? Thank you in advance..Re: 4th of July in DC?We actually went to DC for July 4th, 2012. Although it was hot and busy, we had a great time! After all the research, we were more than prepared to handle the crowds. The morning of the 4th, we had a good size breakfast, and then went ahead to the parade. We took some umbrellas for the sun, sunscreen and good walking shoes. We parked ourselves under a shade tree and watched about half the parade. We then made our track toward the reflection pond, had lunch at one of the outdoor eateries near the Vietnam Memorial and around 3 that afternoon we sat between the pillars of the Lincoln memorial. We had brought snacks, card game, crossword puzzles, etc. to keep us busy, along with a blanket to sit on. There was such a fantastic breeze and the sun was behind us the whole time. The view of the fireworks was spectacular and I wouldn't have done it different. It was actually nice to take a break for an afternoon, after all the walking from the other days. We made lots of nice conversations with the people around us, and even during the fireworks, the people behind us got engaged. We knew the metro would be slammed packed after the show, so we took advantage of the decent cool night and walked to the white house for a great evening photo shoot. Maybe I'm being optimistic, but we didn't have a bad time at all. We were prepared for the day and since it's a once in a lifetime for us to do that, we made the best out of it. I also forgot to mention that we had our kids with us at ages 6 and 10.Re: Fredericksburg, TX RV ParksWe stayed at the Lady Bird Johnson RV park also, and we enjoyed it there. The front desk was very very nice, the sites were decent, and we enjoyed staying next to the airport. The kids really enjoyed sitting and watching the planes coming and going. It was a nice and relaxing time. It was a short 5 minutes into town and there is a nice HEB grocery just a couple minutes away. We would stay there again when we go through there.Re: Boulder, ColoradoWe have searched around that entire area for a decent RV park. We have family that we like to visit in Broomfield. Our visit last year was to St. Vrains. I wouldn't necessary rate it high, but it was just ok. We didn't feel any type of warm welcome there, and felt that it was just an ok place to park the motorhome. Just my opinion that we will be looking for an alternative park when we travel there this year.Re: Tossing it out there ... planning our vacation..@GGeorge. That's really a nifty Idea! Thank you for the suggestion. There is so much to see, it's amazing. @profdant. We went to the canyon last year. It was amazing. Nothing we could prepare for.Re: Tossing it out there ... planning our vacation..@profdant139 Our kids are 11, 7 and infant. We'll have about 16 days for the trip. But we're hoping to not have to drive the entire time and maybe just pick a few points to highlight.Re: Tossing it out there ... planning our vacation..@Ron3rd: no, we didn't. we kept Zion simple for the kids sake,,, and probably mine as well. I had a hard enough time getting up Mt. Evans. going from sea level to 14K feet was already an experience.Re: Tossing it out there ... planning our vacation..Thank you all so very much for your input! These are great suggestions! We love visiting the museums and doing the things that each of you mentioned. It's all right up our ally.Tossing it out there ... planning our vacation..Last year when I was planning my family vacation, I used this site and forum a lot. It was very useful for us to research and see what others had to say. All in all our trip was a huge success! We started off in Houston, made our way to the Grand Canyon, went to see some friends in Phoenix, saw the lights in Vegas, toured Hoover Dam, Hiked Zion National Park, Went through temple square, up through Wyoming, Put on our big people boots and went up Mt. Evans, and through Estes Park, and then took the way back home through Amarillo and Dallas! We had such a great trip, and the kids got to see a lot! Now we are trying to plan for this year's vacation. We're completely up in the air as to what we want to try next. We're thinking something more low key, maybe like Smokey Mountains. How about traveling to Michigan, and crossing the border into Canada at Sarnia. Has anyone ever done that in an RV? Any problems you encountered?
