Any recommendation for campground in Anchorage? Google is not showing much of good choices. How can you stay away from Tok? That is the only route you can drive and actually roads in the area are way better, than those closer to the border. iOverlander.com available online or as a free app is a very good camping resource for all northern regions (and for a lot of the rest of the world too for the more adventurous) "good choices" is in the opinion of the camper and often it comes down to beggars not having the luxury of a lot of choiceRe: Overnight at Wally'sThe snarky reporter referring to the fantastic view of Canadian Tyre in Walmart parking lot was looking the wrong way. Nothing wrong with the view we had looking across the road Re: Driving the Dempster HwyMay as well keep going to Tuktoyoktuk then. We did it in a 35' over wide class A last seasonRe: Emergency Communications Oh Tony try your Delorme SE at about 10 mile Haines highway where there is no gps coverage Mine has been well tested as far south as Ushuaia and the rest of South America and up as far as Toktoyoktuk on the Arctic Ocean in Canada, over a fair bit of Alaska and south to southern Mexico, and a lot of Europe including all parts of Iceland and the Delorme always gets through. Cell phones - waaaaayyyy less coverage including no coverage over large areas of mainland USA The Delorme isn't perfect but its tracking feature means anyone on the list gets updates on your position every 10 minutes, and two way text messaging is possible with any mobile number or email address. Still, if you always restrict your wanderings to Main Street USA then a cell phone should be OK.Re: Emergency Communications alaska dennis wrote: Carry bug dope. Have a sign describing your problem and some sort of emergency light . Flag down the first vehicle. (bug dope) I don't stop for emergency flashers unless I see a person. to many people use their flashers for picture taking--no emergency. So you run over the bank into the forest and are badly injured. So you get out your sign writing kit, and using your powerful flashlight to see in the dark, describe your situation on the board you always carryand clamber up the cliff to sit on the side of the roadto wait for the next car to come along and read your sign. Must get a bit heavy carrying it all when you wander off on a long hike. A Delorme SE is much betterRe: WARNING: Don't buy a kombi from Pro-vision Garage in MexicoUgly Bob, I suggest you add your story to ioverlander in the Warning category. Also I didn't think businesses could censor customer reviews of the business on googleRe: WARNING: Don't buy a kombi from Pro-vision Garage in MexicoUgly Bob is an international traveller - as am I and we don't have the luxury of sitting at home to make our vehicle purchases. He was just unlucky. I bought our Airstream Cutter MH in CA sight unseen. Many years later we still have it and there have been no problems that I haven't been able to fix on the side of the road. Been from bottom of Mexico to the Arctic Sea and all points between. F350 with Big foot camper bought sight unseen in South America. Did the job perfectly although we did have some brake and suspension problems. OKA 4WD truck - bought sight unseen and it is still going strong. Class motorhome - bought in Amsterdam. Did the job but was a bit of a pain so we took it back and got a refund Iveco Daily 4x4. Bought sight unseen in South America knowing exactly what a bomb it was and paid the right price for it. WS only intended to last 6 months and it did everything asked of it. Decided to continue in south America which is why we bought the big foot. So I perfectly understand the OPs situation and for me, sight unseen has worked well and saved us many thousands in wasted air fares and accommodationRe: Anchorage Campgrounds, bad as they say?Walmart and Cabellas were far better value for the money last seasonRe: Milepost allen8106 wrote: Looking to get my hands on an old version of the Milepost book. PM me if you have one you are willing to part with. Smart move. The older it is, the less useless info it will have in it
