As others have mentioned, getting away from cities & trying for high altitudes helps. One of my favorite milky way photos includes skies that are not all that dark, but with a meteor and Devils Tower, I like it. What time of year was this picture taken?Re: Dark Sky CampingCosmic Park off 180 North of Silver City, NM https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/gila/recarea/?recid=82479 Most of rural NM is going to be dark sky except around the oil patch in the southeastern part of the state.Re: demming, nm 2 Roswell, nm NMDriver2 wrote: If you want to easily get from Deming to Roswell then stay on US 70. There is a long gentle pull from Las Cruces up to the top of San Augustine pass. You almost don't know you are climbing until you get close to the top. It is then a long gentle down hill to the bottom. Flat all the way across the Tularosa Basin to Alamagordo. A gentle series of pulls up to Ruidoso and then gentle down to the 380 junction. From the 380 junction to Roswell you are following a river so there are some curves and up and downs but nothing to cause any trouble. Do not try to follow 70 through Las Cruces. Instead go south on I-10 to the I-25 north junction and take that back up to catch US 70 as it heads out of town. I would also use the Charlie Lee Relief route (US 54) around Alamagordo. Watch your speed between Alamagordo and Tularosa. The only way to completely avoid mountains is to drop down to TX and come up 285. Not only is it out of the way, but 285 is under construction according to another post on the forum. You can go up 54 to 380 and turn east at Carrizozo. As mentioned the road is not as good and there are still a few grades. Interesting places to stop and explore though if you have time and like old west history. x2 on this. Apache Summit between Tularosa and Ruidoso is the highest point but its all a good 4 lane.Re: Santa Fe, NM RV Parks and To-Do's GordonThree wrote: Take a drive out to Los Alamos, there's a great historical museum about the lab and the lab library is open to the public. After you go through security you can drive highway 501 which skirts around the lab - kinda neat looking at all the buildings with non-descriptive "tech area" names. and of course there's the U.S. Property - Lethal Force Authorized signs. There's also Valles Caldera National Monument, a dormant volcano. You can drive on the caldera and visit the park headquarters, it's a neat drive and cool headquarters building. I stayed at Trailer Ranch, as they were open year around and I was there early January. They don't allow kids (21 and up), and the place is mostly a trailer-park and only small portion is "campground" ... no complaints about my stay - they had electric, cable tv and hot showers. Water was turned off at the site but available from an out building. They're pet friendly with a fenced in dog park past the trailer-park section. If you ever watched the Longmire series on Netflix, Walt's cabin is in the Valles Caldera. You have to stop at the visitor center to get the free permit to go on up to the cabin.Re: Las Cruces NM to Camp Verde AZI 10 to I 17 and on inRe: Where to camp in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexicohttp://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/SPD/FindaPark.htmlRe: Spring trip to New Mexico? In April or May you may want to be low and south. Three Rivers campground south of Carizozo is nice if you like hiking. It's about 14 miles off US 54. The petroglyph site is nice and its not far from Valley of Fire SP. White Sands and Alamogordo are close. East of Ruidoso on 380 is Capitan with the Smokey the Bear home and Lincoln. There are campgrounds in that area.Re: rt 152 new mexicoDoable if you aren't in a hurry and you know how to drive on curvy roads. I have seen 5ers in the campgrounds on the west side of Emory Pass. As others have said its a great road for motorcycles. This video will show you what you will be getting into. The rider is going east to west like you would be. There is one hairpin turn that is after the end of the vid. There is another one on the other side of the summit. Overall there are about 25 miles of twisty roads. There are two low clearance bridges on the road. They are marked as 12' 6 or 12' 8. Those are the heights at the sides. There is clearance in the middle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUuk60u2ZD8&t=151s
