All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Newbie Tow Capacity QuestionI continue to be amazed by the fact that a simple question like this is not a sticky. It’s a straight forward process, get your payload number and tow ratings. Look at GVWR of the trailer and factor a tounge weight range of 12-15% and that should get you in the ball park. It is also notable that NOT everyone brings along a 1/2 cord of firewood, 4 kids and 40 gallons of freshwater. Everyone’s RV experience is different, give them the facts and let them choose. I will, say this towing an RV is a lot like driving on winter roads, if you don’t like that, go light or don’t tow. Just my 2 cents??Re: Blow out water lines questionI’ve blown my lines out every year with no issues. Live in MN so it gets cold and stays cold. Pretty easy empty hot water heater, hook up air and set to 90psi, open up each faucet one at a time, let it go till all you have is mist coming out. I do drop RV antifreeze in the p-traps and toilet. Use way less punk stuff, and easy start up next year, just turn water on. Biggest myth is you need to get ALL water out, it’s okay to have some stay in, just don’t want full blockage of the line by ice.Re: Test Drove a 6.2l Yukon DenaliI have a 6.2 in a Silverado. On the ruck boards they report GM ‘detuning’ HP and torque off the line to save the tranny. So far I love the engine, like the 5.3 need to let it sing to get max power . . . But it sounds great when singling!Re: How fast do you goI try and drive the speed limit up to 70mph. Experience has taught me people try and do dumb things when passing a Truck TT combo. Rig feels solid so the fewer people passing me the better.Re: Tandem Tow DollyNever understood the concept of a tow dolly, 1/2 of your drive line is getting wear and tear and the other 1/2 is not. Flat bed would cost more but the resale would be there in the end. Of the 3 I take the tandem tow dolly, but if the incremental expense is there go flatbed.Re: I'm surprised there's not more posts hereI used to read this broad all of the time, it honestly the TT forums and the Tow Vehicles have become a bit cantankerous at times. I am suprised that with the experience we have here that a ‘sticky’ has not been created to walk a newbie through ‘what can I tow question’. So every time the question is asked people don’t have to restate the same points right and wrong. Add in the natural personality quirks and you get entertaining reading but nothing of real value. I have seen more that one poster drop off because of being overwhelmed by the comments made to them some of which get too personal. I also think the bulletin board style system is antiquated, I have never posted a pic but I don’t have the paitience to try. Love it or hate it FB is popular because it’s mobile friendly, easy to use and what many people use to connect on various issues. Searching is also a PITA, in theory each question should only be asked once, in practice the will be off shoots. This leads to. Ultiplr similar conversations over time for a newbie it overwhelming on where to start and what to believe, at least one guy likes to pos5 previous to hot topics. Just my 2 cents feedback is a gift.Re: Do all lightweight large TT's tow terribly, or just ours? the bear II wrote: I know photos can be deceiving but to me it looks like the front of the trailer is higher than the rear. I would like to see some more squat at the rear of the suburban. The weight of the rear slideout may be the culprit. What he said. Slide aft axel will cause issues. When loading try and get weight in fro to of the axel, than and 1-2 more washers should help.Re: Opinion on half ton trucksSeems like a lot of a Ford opinions I’ll share a Chevy. I own a 17 LTZ 8sp 6.2. I specifically sought out this combo as like you I tow maybe 7-10 trips a year. I tow either a 6500lbs 12’x14’ enclosed trailer for Scouts or a 25’ 7200lbs Gulfstream. I tow enough for a HD 1/2 ton but not enough for a 3/4 ton. If I full timed or drove in the mountains I’d probably have the 3/4 ton but I don’t. The 8 speed keeps the engine in the power band, and there is plenty of it. Braking is excellent as well. Pulling trailer I get about 11-13 mpg. Not pulling I get 20-23 hwy 12-14 city. Handling with the Scout trailer is rock solid, still need to fine tune the Equalizer on the RV, but it’s 95% there. Payload is 1556lbs. Life is sometimes a compromise, tough living with a 3/4 ton 350 days a year to use it 15. I also know how to pack. With the RV I am close to my payload so I do not put anything in the truck bed and I don’t carry water. The slide out has the dinette right over the axels of the TT that’s where most of our stuff goes. Essentially I have more cargo capacity in the trailer than the truck, not a perfect solution but one that works for me the few times a year I tow.Re: GM 6.2L Gas Engine for pulling?I have a ‘17 LTZ w/ a 6.2l 8 speed. I specifically sought this combo pull our 7200lbs 25ft TT, and also 6000lb 10x12 enclosed Scout trailer. Very happy with the setup. Plenty of power at all speeds but especially off the line at the hard stop. The only time you feel the 8 speed is in the first 3 gears. 1&2 are low, especially 1st and if you are not pulling it shifts to #2 pretty quick. After 3rd I never know what gear I’m in as the shifting is smooth and no hunting. When towing I turn on tow haul set it to M6 to lock out the 2 overdrives and it does great. Best part is non-towing highway gas is 22 city around 13 even in the dead of MN winter with occasional Auto 4wd. Worst part is we so much power it’s literally worthless in RWD with even the tiniest amount of snow or moisture. Traction control kick and the fun ends ??Re: Hauling waterI have never carried water, but I don't boondock, and we tend to go to the same campgrounds that have good water and are reliable. I used a simple in-line water filter works great. Carrying extra water never made sense when traveling we always used test stops or gas stations. To each their own, and that's not a bad thing.
