For our situation, we’ll end up with a Memorial Day Lowes Special, hard to beat a basic 10 cu ft household fridge for $300. I’m going to install an inverter and another battery, and still be well over $1,000 cheaper than a gas fridge. I was thinking back about the 25 years we have owned a gas fridge, and fewer than 5 times did we need gas. For what we do, a $600 set-up for a fridge and inverter with my generator should be adequate.Best Fridge TypeWe have had 2-way and 3-way fridges for years. I need to replace out discontinued Atwood unit that is a headache, and have been reading about the 12V compressor fridges. We are 99% RV Park type folks, only time we are boondocking is for an occasional overnight stop at Walmart, and even then I have a generator. The 12V units seem to be more economical and larger for the same size cutout than the 2 way units, downside being they can drain the battery when not hooked up to shore power. We have a 15 year old travel trailer and have no desire to go Lithium, so would a 12V be advisable for travel and being plugged into shore power. Brand preference or brand to stay away from? I don’t want the Atwood “no longer supported” headache I have now.Atwood Refrigerator Door BinsWe bought a used camper with a discontinued Atwood HE refrigerator. Unfortunately the prior owner misplaced all the door bins…not sure why they took them out. Anyway, Dometic discontinued the Atwood line and parts are no longer available and I cannot find any on eBay, salvage, etc. Any ideas on how to maybe permanently install some door bins, or maybe a cross reference for door bins for an Atwood HE 08-01. I tried a Norcold bin and the locking tabs are different, so no luck there.Worth repairing?I had a seal fail around a slide out that quickly advanced to a cracked sidewall. We took a 12 hour trip over rough roads, and 10” crack appeared above a slide. Is this worth fixing? We tried to trade it in and the dealer basically didn’t want it. It’s a nice 7 year old 38’ fifth wheel that usually sells retail around $26,000 on the used market. I was willing to take $13,000 on wholesale trade, but when we arrived, the dealer walked away from the deal and said the rig is totaled. Of course as we hooked up and were leaving they ran out to offered us $10,000, but we were already tired of dealing with them. Is a crack worth fixing and on an otherwise good shape camper?Florida State Parks Early ReservationWe’ve been camping for over 30 years, so not a newbie here, but apparently I still have not learned the tricks for Florida state park reservations. Back in the day (pre-COVID) we could almost always find a reservation 3-4 months out for even the most popular State Parks outside of maybe the Key’s or a few other places. Nowadays, it’s seems you have to attempt to reserve 11 months+14 days at exactly 8:00 EST AM to even have a chance. But what is really odd, even dates that would not be considered popular and “out of season”, like February in the Panhandle on a Wednesday, are snatched up quicker at 8:00 AM than you can physically even hit the buttons. I just don’t see how it’s possible that every single site for every single day on a one day reservation in the middle of the week can be snatched up so quickly. Is there some trick I’m missing, or a bot running in the background that is grabbing all these sites? Forget a holiday weekend, I never see reservations open for those. I’ve been running a “test” getting on at exactly 8:00 AM 11months+14 days to book a site preparing for a holiday weekend in 2023, and even just random dates I can’t seem to get a site quick enough. What gives?Re: Topsail Hill, Florida Reservations not efficient?I did find out today from a ranger that the State is not allowing rebooking at this time to control the crowds. They are honoring current reservations, but if someone cancels or shortens their stay, they are keeping the site open to limit visitors in the park.Topsail Hill, Florida Reservations not efficient? Not being critical, just making an observation. My party had three sites reserved from Memorial Day weekend through the following week at Topsail (9 days in total). Because of travel issues, we had to cancel two reservations at the last minute, but I kept mine. We got all our money back less the fees, but those two other prime spots, which are next to us, were open all week as if they were reserved. When I looked on-line after I cancelled, they showed booked all week. We had some other friends that wanted to come in, and when I inquired at the check-in about these two spots that I cancelled that are empty but appear to be reserved, they told me they have no control over the sites and I would have to contact Reserve America. Long story short, Reserve America said all the sites are booked solid till September, even just two nights, yet I’m looking at multiple empty spots around the campground and have been empty for over a week. Just think of all the money the state of Florida is missing out on because I know for a fact at least two sites were given a refund, and no one else booked them. Seems like an odd business practice to me to try and not rebook.Re: Texas Hill Country IdeasThanks everyone. This gives us a good start.Texas Hill Country IdeasWe are heading to the San Antonio/Hill Country area the first week in April for a 7-10 day trip. Any campground suggestions close enough for a day trip or two into San Antonio? We stayed in the Kerrville years ago, but interested in other ideas and campgrounds as well. We have a 37' Fifth wheel. Thanks!Texas Beach CampingWe’re looking at a first week of April camping trip to South Texas. We’ll spend a few days in San Antonio, then head to the beach somewhere, per our 14 year old daughters request. I grew up there, but haven’t been back in 30 years, and my daughter never has been there. I remember back in the day, we used to take our pop up down on the beach, seems like around Mustang Island. I also remember my dad getting stuck in our Ford LTD! We have a 37’ fifth wheel and diesel truck. Several folks have told me to camp on the beach for the experience, but we have nearly 20,000 lbs of truck and camper. Is the sand really that compacted? Any recommendations on where to go? Were driving from TN, so South Padre is a little too far. We’re wanting to do three to four days in San Antonio or Hill Country area and three days at the beach, probably around Corpus Christi.
