The roads in the mountains are much easier than Hwy 17 along Lake Superior, the grades are more in Ontario and there the road is narrower, having said that there are lots of Provincial Parks along the route, and except for Long weekends you should not need reservations

You should have no trouble at all pulling with the Highlander, no experience with a Pathfinder, but probably just as good, they both have the same tow ratings.
