All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Selecting a truck camper-help pleaseYour post brings back memories. I went through almost the same thought process as you when I retired and planned a trip to Alaska in 2005. I too had a lot of experience with travel trailer camping but decided a truck camper would be best for the Alaska trip. That was one of the best decisions I ever made. I bought the Outfitter popup in my signature, made the trip, and enjoyed the freedom of truck camping so much that I never went back to travel trailer camping. I have enjoyed my Outfitter, but if I had it to do over again, I would get a hard side camper. It is a bit of inconvenience to put up the top, especially after you get to be an old fart like me. By all means, take the trip. Alaska is the trip of a lifetime. Good Luck.Re: Help.....buying a camperI heartily recommend truck camping. I pulled travel trailers for years, but on retiring I bought the truck camper in my signature for a trip to Alaska and found it fit my camping style. If I had it to do over again I would probably go with a small hard side camper. In order to get an estimate on the weight of a given camper model the truck camper buying guide at Truck Camper Magazine might be helpful. The advice to get in several campers to see how they fit you is very important. Then it is a matter of deciding if your truck can handle the weight or if you need a truck with more hauling capacity. Good Luck.Re: Truck Camper Attic - how much do you use?The first time I climbed the ladder with stuff to put in my roof top carrier, I decided that was more adventure than I needed in my life. :) I don't use my roof top carrier.Re: Alien Revenge?I have always enjoyed Wazoo's trip reports. That being said, when I read this one, with the interior shots of his Outfitter and his statements of how much he enjoyed the open feeling of it, I thought "when do you get your check from Outfitter". Evidently I was not the only one with this thought. On the Outfitter web site there are links to all of Wazoo's trip reports.Re: Questions from a NewbieJust to set the record straight. The newer pop up truck campers do not use canvas and I have never had a problem lowering mine with a wet side wall. As to the construction, different makers use different designs. For example, my Outfitter has a basement and the tanks are there. Northstar pop ups do not have a basement and many of their units have cassette toilets which eliminates the black tank. Your best bet is to look at as many units as you can, because only you can decide which fits you best. One great resource is Truck Camper Magazine's buyers guide. Buyers Guide. I get 13 - 15 mpg with mine. Good LuckRe: Another TCer going to the darkside UPDATED PHOTOSLots to like with the View Profile - Good fuel mileage, Cab seats swivel for comfortable seating and only 25 feet long. If you want to travel rougher roads with it, these folks do a 4X4 conversion for the sprinter chassis. Sprinter 4X4 Conversion Good luck and enjoy!Re: Outfitter roof material? My 2005 Outfitter has TPO. EDPM puts out black streaks. If you do not have a problem with black streaks yours probably has TPO.Re: Satphone experiences...There are several new systems that provide two way satellite text messaging using a gps device plus your cell phone. Just google "two way satellite messaging". Not as good as a phone, but less expensive and still provides two way communication.Re: Happy Canada Day!Beautiful country, friendly people and good neighbors. Your national pride is well deserved.Re: New Roof VentLost two vent lids on my Outfitter before adding a Maxxair vent cover. Not only keeps the lid from blowing off it allows you to keep the vent open in the rain - win, win.
