Twelve days in the Canadian Rockies then on to Dawson Creek and the Alaska Highway arriving in Tok on June 25.Dry vs Actual Pin WeightsFor those of you that have 5th wheels in the 35 foot range, what was the difference between the dry pin weight and the actual pin weight of the trailer ready to go.Re: Protecting one's TV and TT while driving the Alaska HwyWe made the trip last summer pulling our Windjammer trailer. No problems encountered. The Alaska Highway was better than I was led to believe from talking with others that have made the trip. The road was paved for the entire length but you do need to watch for holes, bumps made from filling holes, and the frost heaves. The worst section was the last 200 miles before the Alaska border. I kept the speed down to about 40 mph so I could enjoy the scenery and keep an eye out for any damaged sections of road. The best advice I received about avoiding vehicle damage was to stop for oncoming trucks if you are on a gravel section of road under repair. That way you do not have any forward speed if the truck throws any gravel in your lane. We did not get hit by anything and had no damage to the truck or trailer while on the trip. Take it slow and enjoy yourselves as it is a great trip.Re: Recommendations NeededWe went there this summer from Florida in a Rockwood Windjammer. We had no problems that were the fault of the road conditions. Regardless of which trailer you buy, you must be aware of road conditions. The roads were generally good but some spots had road damage and frost heaves to watch out for. So take your time and enjoy the scenery. Have a great trip.Re: Didn't Believe about the Chinese TiresI just put 13000 miles on my chinese tires during a recent trip to Alaska. Of course the tires say Goodyear on the side.Medical Care in CanadaWe are planning a trip to Alaska this summer and will be driving through western Canada along the Alaska Highway. For those of you like me that are on Medicare, what did you do for medical care coverage in Canada. As I understand it Medicare does not cover you outside the US.Re: Wekiwa Springs State Park FloridaWe stayed there two months ago for 3 nights during the week. It is a popular place so reservations must be made far in advance for weekend dates. We camped during the week so only half the sites were occupied. Sites 1 -30 now have full hookups including sewer.RVs on Alaska Marine SystemWe are planning a trip to Alaska next summer. Would like to visit Haines and Skagway. From the photo on the website it looks like the vehicles are loaded and unloaded at the rear of the ferry. My question is can you take trailers on the ferrys and how are they loaded / unloaded. Do you turn around the rig inside the ferry? Thanks.Re: What is a "Grown Tire"?I have a Windjammer trailer that had a tire clearance problem causing the tires to rub the wheel wells. The trailer manufacturer replaced the axles with mounting brackets providing more clearance. In my calls to Dexter their engineer told me they recommend a minimum of 3 inch clearance to allow for the axle flexing.Re: Roll Call Alaska 2014We too are planning a summer trip to Alaska. We live on the east coast of Florida so it will be almost 2800 miles till we cross the border into Canada from Montana. Plan to leave Florida around May 15th stopping along the way in Rapid City area and the Canadian Rockies. Probably arrive in Alaska around June 15th. Two months in Alaska then back to Florida stopping along the way in Canadian Rockies again and Glacier NP in Montana. Hope to hear from others planning a similar trip.
