While fueling at the station accross the freeway (think it was the BP, but it really doesn't matter), a kid came up and started the same conversation. However, what he didn't know is I have 30 plus years as an aircraft and auto mechanic. I quickly told him to leave, and I left after fueling. i feel for the folks that get taken advantage of by people like this. They have no conscience, no concern for anyone but themselves. Scammers have always been around, and they will always be. The best defense is to not react out of emotion, but to remove yourself from the situation. Since you were heading to Las Vegas, your next town would be in about 45 miles (Cedar City). IF there were to be a problem (and that is a huge IF), you'd be able to get help there. At Cedar City, if the concern is there, stop at one of the tire shops and ask them. Just like in medical, a second opinion (especially from another town) can normally be trusted. Sadly, Beaver is very small, and I can't remember more than one tire shop, but if there were, the bet goes they are owned by the same person. The other suggestion I have is when you noted the tires were not what was advertised, a little internet search would have solved it. Since most folks carry a smart phone (or tablet, or laptop), this can be done easily. I would also ask why the tires being installed were not verified by the buyer as being correct. All tires state the load rating, load range, max load and max psi on the sidewall. I'm not trying to be a ****, but have sadly seen too many folks (to include me and my parents) get zapped by someone or something. Very few things in life require immediate attention, but these types of folks prey on emotions, and emotions are the hardest thing to control. My parents, in the same situation, most likely would have done the same thing as the OP, and my dad wouldn't have done the calls to verify pressures, so he would have had bigger issues. Hindsite is 20/ 20, and when I make an error, I am harder on myself than anyone else could be, but when I do, try and learn from the mistake. Learn how to educate myself on whatever I made the mistake on. The OP did the best thing possible by spreading the word, but he is now out his time for the replacement of good tires with bad, the time to have the bad ones changed out, plus the cost of getting replacements that are correct. This isn't right, and the shop needs to be held accountable, and that could mean a civil lawsuit for lost time and cost of the second set of tires, pursuing the BBB and consumer affairs complaints (which has been done), and maybe getting the local TV channels involved. Salt Lake City has some good consumer affairs folks on TV, and bad publicity always hurts. The other thing to do is contact Motor Home Life and Trailer Life as a letter. The more folks that are aware and can not be taken, the better.Re: Why did you start full-timing?We'd been talking about it for a few years. In 2015, my wife was rated 100% disabled with PTSD and numerous nueorlogical issues, all thanks to our time in the Air Force. We were in Savannah, Ga and I was unable to work due to her issues, so we decided he time was ripe. We're looking for a place to feather our nests when she (or I) can't do this any more.Re: New tires for 2013 f250 powerstrokeI recently put Cooper A/T3's on my 2013 F250, but to give me a little comfort when towing my fiver (weight police alert), I went up to 295/70R18's. They can carry about 4000 per, fit the stock chrome clad 18" wheels, don't rub and actually fixed me high reading speedo. They're only 1" diameter larger (1/2" taller ground to axle) significantly wider, and carry my trailer much better. I've taken them into the Grand Staircase area of Utah, and am going to Moab in a couple of weeks. We have put about 2500 miles on them, they're wearing very well and are quiet.Re: California DMV weight feeI lived in the SF Bay Area for about 40 years due to work. As far as I know, Ca. Has always considered a "pickup truck" a commercial vehicle. I remember asking a CHP officer one time about it when I was driving my dad's 72 GMC C15, and was told that if you carry ANYTHING in the bed, it is considered a commercial vehicle. That applies to your own suitcase. So, 2 choices. 1. Risk having non-commercial plates and getting zapped with a huge fine, or 2. Suck it up. All for the privilege of living there. For me, it ain't worth it.Re: California adds 12 cent gas tax and 20 cent diesel tax darsben1 wrote: FAKE NEWS Sadly, it isn't fake. We're in Ca right now, and they did just pass this added tax. The gas and diesel take effect 1 Nov, the additional vehicle registration (from $25 to $125) take effect 1 Jan. To give you an I'dea of what prices are, we're in Pleasanton (east San Francisco Bay Area) and diesel is $2.97 to $3.09. The roads here are the worst I've seen in quite some time. We came out of Las Vegas on I-15, to Ca 58, to I-5, and there were very few spots where I wasn't playing "chase the potholes". They have the money, but since the answer is political, I won't say what the folks in Sacramento have to say. If we didn't have to be here to take care of some business, we wouldn't be here. Oh, and before any California residents say anything, both my wife and I are native, smart Califirnian's. We left!Re: Disgruntled Millennials on the RoadI normally don't post, but you are in almost the exact same position as my wife and I. We both retired after 22 years in the Air Force and bounced from job to job. About 3 years ago, my wife was diagnosed with PTSD due to numerous issues with her supervisors and experiences when deployed. We were in Special Ops and Rescue, so we're involved in strange things. I was working for a DOD contractor overseas when she was diagnosed, and we decided we needed me to stay home, not be 10,000 miles away. I took a job in Savannah, with the plan that when her 100% came thru, I would stop working in order to stay home with her and her issues. Well, we did just that, and sold everything except our truck and bought a fifth wheel. Since than (started Aug 2015), we've travelled back west (where we were both raised). We use the VA for her medical, since her issues are better treated there. What we do is to be near a VA facility when she has an appointment, and if we have time between the next one, we get out. A normal gig looks like this: we stay in St George, Ut for a few weeks in November, and when she needs to go for treatments in Las Vegas, we drive down (about 100 miles each way). If she has multiple appointments in the same week, we stay at either Nellis AFB or a nice resort. We have found that we can survive about a week before we go into the PTSD mode. As far as neighbors, the RV actually helps by forcing her out to walk the dogs, and they're a great ice breaker. Yes, you will run into the schmuck every once in a while, but generally, most folks are friendly and willing to help if you need it. Of course, if you don't like your neighbors, the weather, whatever, move. Feel free to pm me and I can get you our phone number and we can discuss it further.Re: Side Wall Ripped/broke while retracting slide-advise neededI'm having the same issue, just not as bad. Our 2016 (built July 2015) 353RLstarted having the wall next to the main slide (at the refergirator end) looks like the stud separated from the toe plate. The wife noted the slide sticking when she was running it, and the floor covering has marks. We're on an extended trip and staying in St. George, Ut. So my wife can attend therapy at the Las Vegas V.A. Las Vegas just has too much activity for her and it affects her anxiety. We've been working with the Camping World here, and they've been on the phone with Keystone. They have a tech (Ron) that's real good, and he has a fix planned. What it is, I really don't care, as long as it works. They evaluated and talked with Keystone, and I was there while they were on the phone. Keystone, in their infinite wisdom, is only approving 4 hours. The service manager doesn't care, he's told the shop to fix it, he'll deal with Keystone. We take the trailer in 4 Apr (Monday) and as of right now, we've been told about 1 day. Based on what it's going to take, and how these folks here work (extremely efficient and fast, plus good work), I tend to believe them. However, I also understand that when they open it up, it'll be Pandora's box, so we're set up for 3 days in a local hotel right now. I'll update after the trailer is opened.Re: VA while travellingThanks al for the info. I knew there were others that had done something similar. We'll have an outside medical insurance for urgent things ( illness, injury) and have the VA as the long-lead things as well as the wife's PTSD therapy. We're staying put for a few months then start to head west, Boise and Seattle, and use Seattle as our main for a few months. We're heading to the clinic this morning to talk with our VSO and patient advocate, so it's good to have some knowledge beforehand.VA while travellingThis is my first post, and don't generally post or reply unless asked directly (hate the flaming). My wife and I are preparing to start full timing. We have the tow vehicle (2013 F250) and are waiting for our trailer (Montana High Country 353RL) to be delivered. We're both retired from the military reserves, and do not yet qualify for Tri-Care. My wife is rated at 70% disabled, and is still waiting for additional claims to be processed, and I am at 10% disabled, waiting on further claims. My wife has a requirement to attend therapy at the VA, at this time every 2 or so weeks, plus see a doctor about every 6-8 weeks. The question We have is how does this get accomplished? We're currently living in a house and go to our local veteran center and VA clinic, but how do we do the appointments when travelling? We're planning to stay in one place for as long as 3 months, as little as 1 week.
