I grew up and still live very much in the Sacramento area. There is a no reason for anyone to want to visit Sacramento in the summer time. We want to GET AWAY from Sacramento until maybe October... Well a funny update, maybe nothing, maybe something. The service dept at the dealer installed the hitch facing wrong direction. This maybe part of the issue, maybe it's just how this setup 'feels', but for sure it was not in correctly. Which means the trailer was probably 4-6" forward where it should have been further back. Probably explains why I also with an 8' bed couldn't actually get close to a 90d turn before seeing rear bumper almost touching trailer.775Views0likes0CommentsRe: First tow with new 2019 Ram 3500 and ...disappointed.
Thank you all for the replies. It is not a short bed truck for whoever "guessed" and I'm crabby so apologies now but I even said "long bed" :) And I really do appreciate people taking a moment to post things to consider. Fifth wheel is new to me, Andersen hitch new to me too. I had read plenty and talked to several different RV dealers, I thought I was making a good decision. I will take a look at some of the other options. Good news is the hitch is brand new and while I might take a bit of a loss if I have to go that route and sell it, I'd rather deal with it now and not later.775Views0likes0CommentsFirst tow with new 2019 Ram 3500 and ...disappointed.
Hi - First, not disappointed at all with anything remotely to do with power, exhaust brake, transmission, adaptive cruise control. Those were awesome and no problems at all. My first tow, its a 2019 3500 4x4 long bed with 20" OEM wheels and crapstone tires. I towed home a new 5th wheel (Keystone Cougar 364BHL which is probably in the 12-13K lbs range. had 2 full propane tanks, half full fresh water, two batteries, no other gear). I am using a Andersen Ultimate gooseneck setup. What I was really disappointed with was how much 'tugging' i could feel on the back of the truck while driving. This wasn't from braking, this was just rolling down the highway steady speed of 60mph. For those in the area, this from Grants Pass, OR down to Sacramento, so talking about 300+ miles of I-5. I was ready to get out of the truck after just 200 miles. Dreading every time I hit a rough patch or going over a bridge etc. Tug. Tug. Tug. I don't know if that's the hitch, if this is typical of a 5th wheel (never towed a fifth wheel before), but it really was fatiguing and not something I had expected to feel. Thanks for the continued feedback. Just got back looking for a quote on a Titan tank (52gallon)... like many things right now, inventory is non existent so have to see what the wait time is and that is where I'm currently leaning towards, cost w/installation is just about $1500. And I realize when I said "26g" for current size that I was not accurate. I don't let tank drop past 1/4 so "26g" is more of the usable size of the tank when I'm thinking of capacity. Also just a FYI, doesn't change anything and certainly won't shock anyone familiar with California and CARB - you can't get a gravity fed tank installed by a shop. Thank you for the replies. The OEM tank is 26gallons, so not a lot of range there. I didn't want an 8' bed because most of the time, there is no trailer/hitch and the 6'4 is perfect for everyday use... so the challenge was seeing if there was an option/solution that I hadn't seen. Guess it is either install a new tank (52g) or just deal with the auxillary tank in the bed. Hello - I have a 2017 Ram 2500 w/Cummins with the 6'4 bed, and just purchased our first fifth wheel. I'd like to add fuel capacity for towing and have seen a few threads here with some discussion about transfer cases etc. I live in CA and first couple places I have called asking about "gravity fed transfer case" said it was "frowned upon in CA - like most emission, tuning, etc for diesels". So I can put install a 50g auxiliary tank (transferflow TRAX 3) that comes with a nice LCD display and controls with automatic fuel transfer but installed runs close to $2500. I've also looked at replacing the OEM tank and looks like 52g is about the biggest thing available. That installed is also around $2k. I don't mind spending the money, I am hesitant to put in the auxiliary tank because of the space it will take up. The truck has a B&W turnover gooseneck bed setup which I plan to use with an Anderson hitch. I'm also hoping maybe there's something (besides just a few 5g portable cans) that might allow me to not have the tank in the bed when we don't need it (which will certainly be 90% of the time). Is there another option? And is anyone in CA that has had a gravity fed tank installed (about half the price of the TRAX 3 system)? Hello! Our family has just purchased our first fifth wheel RV, a 2020 Keystone Cougar 364BHL. The trailer is pre-wired for a backup camera, however I am not interested in a furion camera system that requires a dedicated monitor to be installed in the truck. I am trying to find a backup/rear camera that will send to an Android/IOS phone/tablet - and there are many out there - but I was hoping some real world experts/users can give some recommendations. Since the RV is "pre-wired" for a backup camera, I assume that simply means there is power at the mounting area? Also would like something capable of sending real-time images/video while we are driving. So any chance there are some recommendations from others? Thank you!1.4KViews0likes3Comments
