Peter L wrote: We extended the summer last week by driving our Monaco Diplomat to Port Angeles, Washington, drove it on to the Black Ball Ferry Line’s Coho bound for Victoria, BC, hooked up at the West Bay Marine Village and enjoyed a picturesque view of Victoria. The weather treated us to seeing Victoria, BC with all of its European/British flavor and of course Butchart Gardens which is our favorite gardens on earth. Brought the motor home on Saturday and spent yesterday cleaning it and making it ready for the winter months ahead until January when we will take it south to get out of Oregon’s wet and cold winter. How much per foot was the ferry trip? Last time we went across we had a 17' Type B. Made the mistake of telling them it was a MH, they charged me almost double what a 17' van would have been. I haven't dared to take our present 41' MH over!!Re: What did you do to your Class A MH today???Well, it wasn't today, it was last Friday. Filled the tank with 103 gallons of diesel, $297.75 worth!! Now at least I have diesel in case power goes out and we have to live in the MH for a while. Now I need to change the oil and filter, then the trans fluid and filters. Trans fluid is $33 a gal and I need almost 6 gallons. Trans filters are only $70 or so but I only need them every four years or so. Fluid will go longer. Then I can do the coolant change, I did check the SCA's and they're fine for now.Re: Supplemental Brake... Necessity or PreferenceJohnny: The Towing World chart you posted the link to is not really accurate either. In checking three states (OR, WA & CA) that I have researched thoroughly I found that the list was wrong on two of them (OR & WA) and the third (CA) was incomplete. So, buyer beware! I find it "amusing" that some people complain about not enough HP when adding a TT, going to a bigger rig or adding a toad, then say the brakes are fine! If it takes more HP to get it going, then it also takes more braking force to stop it. Simple law of physics and the "law" is NOT suspended for anybody!!Re: Choosing Gasoline or Diesel Powered? wxsby wrote: We are only a year or so away from making this decision so thank you, Johnny, for some great info. A major wish is to be able to tow more weight. But it's my understanding the towing capability depends on a lot more than power and tranny capability. If I were to go with a new 34' or so Ford V-10 with two or three slides and add Banks to the rig, would it increase my towing capacity to anywhere near that of a similar FRED? Or a DP? NO!! Towing capacity is set by the manufacturer of the completed vehicle. By Federal law they are the only ones that can change the ratings. You can change the ease with which it tows that weight by adding aftermarket items but it still doesn't change the ratings.Re: Anyone make a mistake buying first MH ?If you look at my sig you will see that I started RV'ing 48 years ago. That was when my parents rented a trailer, the next year they special ordered their first TT. Special built and heavy so it kept blowing out tires till they put mobile home tires under it. Got my first TT in 1968, tried pulling it with my 1967 Camaro 396 CI/4 speed. Plenty of power (factory rated at 375 HP but NHRA factored to 450 HP) but not enough cooling! Finally went to a 26' TT (with several TT's in between) towed by a 3/4 ton Chev P/U. Moved to a MH in 1988 and have had several since then, 1988 (17' Type B), 1997 (29' Type C), 1998 (35' double slide Type A), 2000 (39' Single slide Type A DP) and now a 2002 (41' triple slide DP).Re: Anyone make a mistake buying first MH ? corgimom wrote: After camping in a pop-up and TT for 25 yrs, we decided to look at a used class C. Saw one on a lot with 23K miles on it at a price we could afford. It was only 2 yrs old and we thought the milage was about right. It was trouble from day one. When the title came, we were surprised to see that it actually had 123K miles on it and was a rental. We weren't told that at the dealer, but then we didn't ask. So we traded it (at another dealer) and got a new one. We've traded several times since then but always bought a new one. We learned a valuable lesson. Depending on the year this happened you should have been given a Federal Odometer statement, that would have told you the actual mileage before you signed the papers.Re: Anyone make a mistake buying first MH ?Of course NOT!! We started with a 17' Type B, then the dog decided the couch was all hers!! Now up to 41' and only one dog, and three cats.Re: Anyone make a mistake buying first MH ?Sure, and the second and the third and the.... Actually we're on our 5th MH and we are getting better at hitting that moving target called "satisfied"!! It's just like when I had boats 12', 17' 18' 23'..... Or my trailers: 16', 21', 23' 26'.... Now, if I can win the Lotto and afford that Prevost or Newell conversion!!Re: Anyone make a mistake buying first MH ?Of course, first MH (17' Type B) that's why there's a second (29' Type C), third, (35' dual slide Type A) forth (39' DP Type A single slide)and now fifth (41+' triple slide DP)!! This doesn't include the boats, the travel trailers, motorcycles etc!! In fact my first three choices in wives turned out to be wrong!!
