We currently have two trucks, a half ton for me to run around in on a daily basis and a one ton diesel dually that is only used to pull the 5ver, which we will not be doing much in the future. I do not like to herd that dually around to just run errands & pull my fishing boat. For many of the reasons listed as 5ver advantages above, looks like we will be keeping the 5ver (and two trucks). Thanks...................Re: TWO QUESTIONS .........Thanks for replies. Current 5th wheel is 39' and we have become used to a king bed, lots of storage and room for 2 dogs. So, any trailer we would get would have to be a big one. But, we would only be pulling it twice a year and not very far. Just toying with the idea. This is our first year of staying in the same place all summer and the dually just sits in the garage.TWO QUESTIONS .........1. thinking of converting from a 5th wheel to a trailer as we mostly go somewhere and park it for an extended period. Question is, what advantages / disadvantages should we expect? For example, we will obviously lose most of our external storage. What else? One obvious advantage, I think, is we could downsize from a one ton diesel dually to a more useful 3/4 ton pickup. 2. so far I don't see any floorplans that we like / need except in a destination model. Any thoughts of this type of trailer? All comments will be appreciated.Re: How to know the actual lenght of Fifth WheelsThere is rarely any correlation between the model number & the actual length. ie Jayco 36rlst is over 39 feet long. A dealer recently said he thought the manufacturers are not willing to use a model number over 39 as really don't want customers to know how long the unit really is. And, brochures, websites etc show different lengths for the same model. Some are from the king pin to rear, others are who knows what. Measure it if you want to know for sure.Re: Old Topic, but New to Me .......My 5th wheel is a Jayco Designer, GVWR 15,800. The current tires are the originals so I doubt that they are more than needed; I sure will not put anything less on the trailer. THANKS for all the info....Old Topic, but New to Me .......My 5th wheel tires are LT235/85R16 LRG with very low mileage but 8 years old. So, time to replace them. What is generally considered to be a quality American made replacement brand?WINTER TIME BLUES .....Both retired now, plan to use 5th wheel a lot more. Currently have a 39' Jayco Designer & a DRW diesel Chevy, both 2008 models. We plan to either: replace carpet in lower level with a wood floor, new tires etc or trade for a new 5th wheel. Anyone have experience swapping carpet for wood flooring?Re: best method of washing rubber roof? Thanks to all, these recommendations are well taken, especially about being careful.best method of washing rubber roof?I know this has been covered many times in the past but I've been away for awhile. Seems I recall scrubbing with a large brush & some soapy stuff & then spraying a protectant on. This roof is only two years old so I want to get it done correctly. (not by me-too old)Re: opinions (i know this is dangerous :))We have had 'em all - travel trailer (30 ft), motor homes (30 & 35 ft) and 39 ft 5th wheel. In my opinion the 5th wheel is best but that is based on my uses etc. Much easier to drive w/o sway etc. I would never consider pulling anything over the limits ! You want a big fiver; get a dually.
