I used to take the hitch out of the truck and lay a framework of 2"x4"s in the bed. This was enough to raise the camper above the rails. It worked fine.Re: First Trip through Canada & into Alaska - Many Questions! thomas201 wrote: One thing Sidehillsoup said on the other thread. Bring some Canadian cash. His reason was the credit card machines were down at some Petro Canada stations. Mine is that the isolated Yukon campgrounds have a cash only box, with no host. So, a little cash is good. I agree, bring some Canadian cash. You are in a foreign country for several days at a minimum, who knows what situation you may find yourself in where cards etc. cannot be accepted for whatever reason, and US cash is not a universal currency. I wouldn't dream of traveling anywhere out of Canada without taking some local cash with me.Re: First Trip through Canada & into Alaska - Many Questions!I made a 9040KM trip from my home on Vancouver Island through BC, Yukon and into Alaska in 2017. I took an extra spare for my 5th wheel and for my truck, a 20" which weighed a ton, and I carted them around with me for10 weeks and never needed them. We were off the tarmac quite a bit, including driving the Dempster as far as the Arctic Circle sign at Eagle Plains. By the end of the trip I was cursing them, but I realize "what if....?" If I did it again I might take an extra for the truck, If I needed one for the 5th wheel I could always unhoohkand go for help.Re: Vancouver island road closureIt has been open for 2 days now, alternating single lane traffic. They have put wire mesh on the slope to try to stop debris coming down but there is still a lot of cleanup to do.Re: It looks like my truck camper days are over.Very nice. Good luck with it.Vancouver island road closureHighway 4 from Parksville to Port Alberni and therefor on to the west coast area of Uclulet and Tofino is closed due to fire on the steep slopes above the highway. There is an alternative 4 hour detour on very rough roads, mainly logging roads but only essential travel is advised and there have been many accidents on this route today.Re: Hwys closed and wild fires in BC & AlbertaYes, if you see in my post I have already made my main reservations and will wait as long as I can before making any rash decisions.Re: Hwys closed and wild fires in BC & AlbertaPlanning a trip from our home on Vancouver Island to the Banff and Rockies in general in Late August-early September, and returning via the Okanagan. I've already reserved a few spots in the busier areas, but I'm beginning to think I may have to cancel and stay on the Island. I'll be keeping a careful eye on the long range forecasts as I don't want to leave it too late to cancel and lose my deposits.Re: Vancouver, Seward, Anchorage and FairbanksLast summer we went to Wells Gray Provincial Park in BC and it was one on the best trips I've had in my long camping years.. There are lots of waterfalls and beautiful things to see, most of which are accessible by short hikes, There are two good provincial campground in the large park and some private ones close to it. Check it out online.Re: It looks like my truck camper days are over.So sorry to read this and see the devastation. I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery
