All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: How Much Does it Cost to Live on the Road?We are retired military, and we took the advice here. We were dreamers for years. SAVE, Save, and save. Use Tricare, and Va Delta dental. We work camp every season somewhere, and use as little as $500 a month including food and site seeing. While moving between season, we can go up to $2000 a month depending on where we want to go. We spent 18 of 25 years overseas, so we want to see the USA. We work camp in different regions each time. We have been on the road for 4 1/2 years now, with no plans to stop. We purchased our rig when we had 2 years before retiring, buying a upper end used 5th wheel. After two years, we found the floor plan we wanted and purchased a new rig. Use Essex for finance, since they cater to full timers, use Escapees, and we used Texas as domicile. Don't expect to make the same money while work camping, as you did before retiring. You're there to retire, not make a fortune. If you want high dollar for short period, do the sugar beets, Amazon, or Christmas Tree deals. But the whole point is to retire, not start a second career. You will find many ideas and advice here, but the biggest is save and have no debt when you're ready to go. Good LuckRe: Full timing1. Escapees. Gets you a rock solid address. Never put P.O Box 000000. Put 204 Rainbow Dr., Apt. or just "box" 00000. Livingston, Texas. 2. Credit Union of your choice, USAA (good, because everything is online or phone), haven't been there in years. BOA, and Chase work 3. Progressive for insurance for Rig or USAA for rig. 4. Priceless while full-timing!Re: Fifth wheel or truck camper for Alaska tripJust returned from Alaska last summer. We took a fifth-wheel and enjoyed the extra room and space to put stuff. At 30' you can fit into 97% of all the spaces in the parks, and 85% of all boondocking situations. The extra water and holding tanks will allow you to sit somewhere and fish for a few more days. And with the fishing so great, you will need space to put that freezer full of fish. The truck camper will put you anywhere, but you will have to make more stops for supplies. A lot of people will come to Alaska with the truck camper towing a boat. They put extra batteries and inverter in the boat for the freezer. Good luck. There is so much information on this forum, plus all the books.Re: First time snowbirding adviceFl is a good choice for snowbirding in Janurary. Please let us know what area of Florida you are looking at. Don't forget southeast Georgia and the panhandle of Florida. There are different budgets for Florida, so keep that in mind. Don't rule out hosting if you're interested in staying in an area where you might not get a reservation. When we are interesting in an area, we call all the parks: private, state, county, city and even private spaces. You would be surprised what's out there. Area?Re: Pulling a 5th wheelTake a look at my profile. We pull a Heartland Landmark with a F-450 with a flat bed from Goff. Works out great for us, since we just tie down everything and go. The bed is higher, and you have to adjust your pin height. Pulls great and I have my aux fuel tank and generator on the back. Good luckRe: The worst part of getting ready to fulltime is...Sitting here in my fifth-wheel starting the 2nd year of Full-timing. I remember just what you guys are going through. I just want to give you a pep talk, and say the means is well worth the end. We sold it, gave it away, pushed it on the kids, Goodwill'd it, polished the house, and sold it too! Now we don't have the heat of the South Texas summer, or the cold of Diluth, Mn. We summered in Alaska this past summer for 4 months, (bucket list thing), and wintered in Central coast California. Soon we'll be off to Northwest Washington to the banana belt, (have to look that one up). Give you a hint--Port Angeles area. And like the "Old-Biscuit" said, if you havn't used it in 6 months, get rid of it. You will spend that much in fuel toting it around, and can buy or rent it again cheaper than keeping it. So hang in there, and soon you'll be on the road saying, "Why didn't we do this 5 years ago?" Good luckRe: Diesel fuel pumpI have the 91 gallon aux tank from Northern Tools, and I purchased the diesel pump from Advanced Auto Parts. I installed a 15 amp inline fuse, cutoff valve, and the largest inline filter and I think it was the Fram G15. It takes about 30 minutes to fill the main tank when I'm not running and an hour if I'm going down the highway. I change the filter every 3rd ro 4th tank fuel. Its a Mr. Gasket Electric Diesel Fuel Transfer Pump, and a red glow toggle switch in the cab. Good luckRe: California- Central Coast - Vandenberg AFBOk guys, We still need someone for this awesome opportunity for the summer. May through September. We have a great place to stay for the summer, so come be a camp host here on the central coast. The weather is great. Thanks, good luckRe: Less fuel stopsI have the 91 gallon RDS. It works great. Even switched it from one truck to the new to me truck. I like the new design for the filler cap. Mine is exposed, and I have to keep a locking cap on it. Good luckRe: Ship To Store OptionI have not found it an option at CW most of the time. When I want an item and the store doesn't have it, I have them order it and when it comes in. Especially if its on sale online, I will ask for the sale price and the free shipping. Most of the time they will not offer it. Always ask. Good Luck
