Some of the best advice he gave me is to never eat at a truck stop, especially if the truck stop restaurant is called "Mom's" or promises down home cooking. When the DW and I stop, we go to the fiver and make a sandwich, or if we are there for a while we fire up the generator so we can use the microwave.Re: FLA REG FEESI moved to Tennessee from Florida. The rates for registering and tagging a vehicle in Tennessee versus Florida is substantial. In Florida, impact fee of $450 for a new plate plus the title fee of $70, In Tennessee, $26 for the plate,, $30 for the title. If you are a disabled veteran, you get a lifetime plate for free. In Florida, they charge $12 a year for a DV plate. Add the higher insurance costs in Florida, and the move to the Volunteer State was a no-brainer. I was Florida born and Florida bred, but the Florida I grew up in is long gone, south Florida is, in the words of one of my high school friends, simply another borough of New York City.Re: Ford truck check engine lightDefinitely a sorry dealer, since you did not buy from them they could care less about you. I have the same problem with the Ford dealership in South Pittsburg, TN. They also sell Dodge/Ram and that is what they prefer, Ford service is an afterthought. After an incident where the service manager there verbally chewed me out for having the gall to bring in a truck I did not buy from them in for service, I drive to the Ford dealer in Winchester, TN who has no problem in servicing my F-250. So blame the dealer, not the brand. Ford has been very good to me when it came to any warranty issues with the last three Ford vehicles I have owned.Re: Good Sam Logo Why the fear of questions?Oh, for crying out loud, already! There seems to be no shortage of perpetually peeved persons who cannot resist finding fault with just about anything, from the Good Sam logo and its tenuous religious ties to the use of the Confederate Battle Flag supposedly being all about racism and slavery. If you are offended, don't look at it, don't display it, and don't support it. But don't expect others to bend to your will to placate your hurt feelings. It isn't all about you and your sensitivities. Life is hard, and no one gets their way all of the time, or even most of the time. Suck it up, cupcake as my military training instructor would say.Re: new traffic law in tnI moved to Tennessee a few years ago. I applaud the General Assembly for passing this legislation. But to be honest there has to be a police presence in order to enforce it. And there is the problem. I RARELY see a state trooper anywhere on I-24 between Chattanooga and my home just off the Monteagle exit. Ditto for county sheriff's deputies. I do see a Chattanooga city police car in the city now and then. I dread going to Chattanooga due to the poor condition of the interstate and the overcrowding of the road. This law won't help that situation.Re: Bankhead Tunnel - Hwy 98 - Mobile, ALWhy do you HAVE to take the Bankhead Tunnel? You would not have to worry about height if you took either the Wallace Tunnel (I-10) or divert to the Africatown Bridge and cross the Mobile River there. Both alternatives have no problem with height, the Africatown Bridge is easy to get to, just follow the Hazardous Load signs. Hazardous Materials are prohibited in either tunnel.Re: Traveling with the Veterans Admin. The more I see what is going on with the VA, the more I am grateful that I have an alternative with Medicare and Tricare For Life. The experiences I have endured in getting VA to adequately handle conditions that led to my medical retirement from the Air Force have led me to believe that the VA is not the place to go for medical treatment.Re: Connecticut closing state campgrounds after the 4th of JulyI attended the University of Hartford and got my bachelors degree there. I really did enjoy my time there. I did consider taking the DW with me to one of the reunions the college has every year. I don't think I will be doing that now if the state looks at me as a cash cow to help fund their state parks.Re: antenna TV question total newbieThe Winegard Sensar with the Wingman attachment is a great antenna. That being said, even a great antenna will not get you a signal if you are in a mountainous area and your campsite is in a valley. When the DW and I were looking for our new home in Tennessee, we rented a site on a monthly basis at a campsite 25 miles from Chattanooga. Most of their transmitters are on Signal Mountain, a Chattanooga suburb that was even closer to our campsite. It made no difference, as we got ZERO over the air signals, as the signals were over our heads. We couldn't even get a cellular signal, no bars. The only way to get television in that area was satellite and cable. If you are in the valley, you probably will not get any usable signal on your Sensar with Wingman.Re: Grocery Shopping on the Road dcpac wrote: hdrichards wrote: Being retired military we prefer the commissaries when they are within our range of travel. Are they really worth it. I have been in for 18 years and I seldom shop at commissaries because the suck in every way, selection, quality and service and the price is not that much lower if at all. I suppose that it is all in the eye of the beholder. We have a very small commissary at Arnold AFB, TN that meets most of our grocery needs. If we want some more selection we drive to Huntsville, AL and use the Redstone Arsenal commissary. If we're in Chattanooga, it's Publix as our go-to store. Without the commissary benefit it would be very difficult for my wife and I to stay within our budget. For use there is a marked difference in the prices in civilian grocery stores and the commissary. Tennessee has a sales tax on groceries that we don't pay at the commissary.
