Nails/tacs sticking and popping out of the walls. Loose squeaky floor, the list went on and on even after dealer claimed to have repaired. Just wasn't worth it to us. We had no sense of security towing it. Went with a 2014 Dutchmen.Re: Weird OdorSkunk will do it....and quite possibly mold. Also, I bought a used car that came off lease. I am an ex smoker and can smell that yuck miles away. The car smelled like it had been cleaned; maybe from detailing, but no bad odors. Three months or so later, we both clearly smell cigarette smoke in the car. The dealers have stuff that will cover anything up.Re: is this common practice? Mike LeClair wrote: Well, please be assured that I am not, in any way, trying to raise anyone's ire. This is MHO only. I think that the "practice" of charging visitors who are joining a paid in full on site customer (for a couple of hours or the entire day) is absolutely reprehensible and is simply another example of "in your face" screwing of the consumer. The rationale of having to cover insurance costs for future liabilities or extra use of facilities is absolutely ridiculous. The insurer does not cost out the policy based on the number of paid guests or visitors or any other such number of random circumstances. The policy is based on industry standards, previous claims, etc. etc. I concur that the "base rate" does indeed take into consideration all of the costs for insurance, guests, visitors and so on. Yup, classic grubbing for extra dollars - kinda like having to pay extra $$$ to have a new propane tank purged, having to pay for air and water at your local "service station" and so on. As always, YMMV Cheers, all! Mike I totally agree!Re: is this common practice? It's not about bashing KOA. We've never even been to one. This particular campground is in New Jersey in Cape May County. I also don't think it's about insurance, but just plain greed. You have to buy wood from them at an outrageous price because they will not allow you to bring it in (even artificial like Duralogs), the camp store had a price markup of very close to 250%, pay for showers at .25 per minute, $5.25 to do a load of laundry WITHOUT dryer. Dryer was additional. Gate key fee, cable tv fee, wifi fee; the list of fees went on and on. To charge $24 for a two hour adult visit also plays into flat out greed.Re: is this common practice? dave54 wrote: Must be a eastern thing. I have not experienced anything like that in the west. All day I could understand, but an hour or two? Apparently the fee doubles if the guests stay overnight.Re: is this common practice? EsoxLucius wrote: $24 to visit? Might as well get another site. That's my point exactly, except the site fee at this particular campground was $80 a night for full hookup. My lunch guests did NOT use any of the campground facilities, including the bathroom. I am somewhat new to camping and had no idea the fees could be that high.Re: is this common practice? So many are even charging for guest vehicles too. I had a couple visit us at a campground for lunch. They were charged $24.00 at the gate to enter!!!!!!! $8.00 each person plus $8 for the car!Re: camping with friendsWe had something similar happen, except a friend (former friend) asked us to join them. Oh no, wouldn't do it. We didn't have our own camper so we rented a class c for the trip. When we got there she sprung it on us that she invited several other families too, all of which came without ANY SUPPLIES! So not only did we have no idea who these people were, but she dumped it in my lap to FEED THEM and chauffer them! To make it worse, her people were horribly rude. By day two I told her I'm done. We went out to eat and spent the rest of the time by ourselves. I have since learned to say NO! We also purchased our own travel trailer and have always found someone to chat with at almost any given moment. You'd be surprised how much you will find you don't need anybody with you to enjoy camping. Less is best!Re: How do campgrounds really get their ratings?I'm not talking about interests or desires, just basic descriptions like, "clean bathrooms", when there is nothing more than a hole dug in the ground. Or, "spectacular lake", and it's a non swimming green puddle of swampy water. Another one, "large wooded sites", this one kills me and is used often when the site resembles nothing about woods or large.Re: big timber lake NJThanks for the info. Doesn't sound like it's my kind of place.
