We bought a new car yesterday, so if we take that car down there it will have only temporary plates and new real registration, just the sales contract (no financing). Here's the problem: This time, we won't be taking the motor home down there. We will be driving the car itself. Last year we had to show the Mexican border people the registration on the motor home, presumably so they could see that it's ours and had no lien on it, but we have never had to show paperwork on toads before. Anybody had any experience driving a newly purchased vehicle down there? We can always take the old Explorer down there this time, but it would be nice to get 40+ MPG rather than 15-17 for the 2,800 mile round trip. Thanks for any insight.Re: Lukeville border crossingWe came through there a couple weeks ago with our 41' rig pulling a toad and had to move to the far left side of that secondary inspection lane to clear the passenger side of the coach. I inched forward a little at a time, getting out of the coach to check a couple times in the process. I ended up clearing the right rear wheel well by less than an inch. When we got to Casa Grande that afternoon I discovered that I had scraped the slideout topper cover on the bedroom driver's side. It damaged it beyond repair, to the point that when I put the the slide out it tore up the topper. That topper is now obsolete, so I had to have a different type installed, at a cost of close to $700.Re: The Reef in Puerto PenascoWe just spent three months at The Reef. During our stay, dozens of people driving through stopped to ask what sites cost there. They were mostly folks staying at Playa Bonita or Playa del Oro, looking for something less crowded. The Reef is 3-4 miles from downtown, so it's not for those who want to hit the bars at night, but for those of us who want a quiet beach, huge sites, good 50 amp power, usable Wi-Fi, and only a few neighbors, it's as good as it gets. If Spring Break weren't about to start, we would still be there. It's a zoo during that time.Re: DirecTV, Phoenix locals, and VuCube Flex antenna Rollnhome wrote: ...DNS replaces local stations and yes there is s fee. ... Yes, there is a fee for local stations? I know there is for DNS.DirecTV, Phoenix locals, and VuCube Flex antennaA friend has DirecTV, connected with a VuCube Flex portable antenna. He gave DirecTV a Phoenix address to get the receiver in his fiver activated. We are in Puerto Peñasco, just south of the border, where other DirecTV users get the Phoenix locals. Should he be able to get Phoenix locals with that antenna? It does not do HD when used with DirecTV. Are locals (not DNS) an extra cost item with DirecTV? I have Dish Network and have no experience with DirecTV.Re: Price of gas in Mexico cgmartine wrote: The problem is that no one in Mexico, even banks, honor the established rates for exchanging dollars into Pesos. It may be 14 something pesos, but they will give you whatever they feel the market will sustain. We went to Mexico two weeks ago, when the dollar was selling for 14 pesos, but I doubt we ever got above 12.5 pesos in Nogales. We have been using Banamex ATMs for our cash for the last five weeks. Every time, without exception, the exchange rate we get is within less than a tenth of a peso of the official rate. Yesterday I got 2,000 pesos, paying a 30.74 peso ATM fee on top of that. Wells Fargo deducted $138.99 from my checking account. That's 14.61 pesos/dollar. Today's exchange rate is 14.66. (Our bank does not charge a foreign currency transaction fee.) We brought $20 in US currency with us for a three month stay. Why be at the mercy of whatever exchange rate the vendors want to use?Re: Taking meats and produce into Mexico?Actually, you don't need a health certificate for dogs, only proof of rabies vaccination. We have been asked for it two of the last three times we have entered through Lukeville.Re: puerto penasco RV park recommendationWe prefer The Reef, where we have been since December 10, primarily because it is far less crowded than Playa Bonita. It is about 3-4 miles from downtown, though. Excellent 50 amp power. The park Wi-Fi was good until about two weeks ago. Currently, download speeds are OK, but upload is so slow that it often times out when sending email. There were only 31 rigs here over the MLK weekend, and that was a surge! Since New Year's, there have been only about 20-25 spaces occupied most nights.Re: How full is your Mexico Campground? Vacancies? Here at The Reef in Puerto Peñasco, I counted 14 rigs this morning. That leaves about 240 sites empty. Since this is "Arizona's beach", I expect that a lot of other gringos will be here between Xmas and New Year's.Re: CELL PHONE INTERNET ACCESS Dirtclods wrote: FoxFi will not run continually and it has adds. So if you want to watch a movie you'll have to reset it. And then it may not always restart but it's FREE. Verizon ellipsis is the way to go. For $7.95 you can buy the paid version of FoxFi, which runs perfectly on compatible phones. The free version is merely a trial version and is hobbled.
