We'll go back to campers when the kids are gone. Kinda nice driving a smaller truck.Re: To TC'ers who have bought new trucksI was in Anchorage looking at the Dodge 5500 chasis cab this week also. Priced out a new one online with all the fancy stuff for ~$60K. Just have to build a flatbed on it then. My 2000 is still pulling strong, and works great...but I need to step up to 19.5" wheels, and the springs are about ready for freshening/replacement. By the time I spend that (getting it all here), I'm going to have around $10K in upgrades according to my estimates. My truck is still running very strong, with a lot of upgrades already. I've got $10K coming from our state dividend check this year...and I think my truck is still worth $16-18K in the Alaskan market. I may even sell the camper as a package. That gives me around $40K to put down on a new truck, and I may even finance a new AF1150 as a motorhome package/second home deal. Routinely I need more hauling capability than I have with my heavily modified F350. I'd like to be driving something that isn't maxed out or even over extended all the time. I've owned my truck for 12 years now, and I'm about ready for something new. Or....I'll just spend the 10K and drive it another 2-5 years. First time in 12 years I've considered selling my truck.Re: Verizon in Alaska?AT&T get 4GLTE across most of the state, in the same areas verizon gets a standard 3G, 4G in some. Verizon is finally here, but using everyone else's towers and network....and they've been slow to expand good service. It'll work fine, just not as good as AT&T.Re: Enter lotery to drive Denali Park road in SeptemberDon't post that link....I haven't won in years. I know several Alaskans who've been trying to win for over 10 years. The last time I won was 2004 (though I've not put in for it every year, as it's during moose hunting season).Re: Is my coach too big? You'll miss out on fitting in some places, and some places only have a few spots you'll fit in, so if they're full you won't be able to camp there. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't worry about it. Reservations will be your friend.Re: What should I stock up on?Bring spares of anything that might break, and any special tool required to fix it. Bring cash. Cash talks big time in canada and Alaska both. Other than that....you can buy anything you need, pretty much most of the way. Maybe bring some ammunition, it's hard to find in Alaska. bringing up your limit of 22LR could probably make you enough profit to pay for a tank of gas.Re: Aligning truck to camper using stripes - thank you! That's what I do also. But, since it's hard for me to judge the alignment before getting to the camper...I also use a laser line beam which projects that line behind the truck. So I start out straight also.Re: Jerry cans? update.page 3I wouldn't do the alcan on a 200 mile range. Not without a couple of cans. I've run out of gas(diesel) on the alcan. It sucks. At least 3 of their law enforcement passed right no by, despite me waving. Probably a hundred candians. One lone American from New York stopped and gave me a ride to the gas station (It was only 9 miles away) and back. I had calculated out everything....until a severe headwind changed my gas mileage drastically. Like I said, I ran out 9 miles short. I've seen gas stations closed down. I've passed other stations specifically because I was planning on a certain one, to find out they closed. I always carry several cans with me. I use them often on the cassiar.Re: Help with fishing in Alaska questionThe felt sole ban was because tourists bring invasive species up from the lower 48 in their felt soled wading shoes...and spread them to Alaskan waters. Didn't used to have ticks up here either, now we do. Most of the kenai river banks are closed to wading. Keep that in mind also. If you want to fish the kenai river, you need to do it from a dock/platform or a boat. If you want to avoid the crowds, make REALLY good friends with someone who lives on the river, or pay a charter.Re: Kenai area cg's-King salmon fishing is closed this year. There are a few options in Soldotna for camping on or very near the river, but they fill quickly, and you may not be able to get a reservation even now. If you are a US military veteran, I may be able to work something out for you. Our nonprofit is developing a veterans transitional housing facility on the kenai river that we're planning to add a few RV sites to. It's for US Military Veterans only though.
