But Boone is much more of a college town than Asheville. When Appalachian State University is in session the population of Boone is about doubled (maybe more than doubled). I don't really consider Asheville a true college town, just a town with a college. Boone is also at a considerably higher elevation than Asheville, so it's cooler and less humid.Re: Fireworks dturm wrote: BTW, don't pass up the potential of "chemical" intervention. There are OTC meds and MANY more prescription meds that can be amazingly beneficial in lessening the anxiety. This isn't the old tranquilizers that we used to use but newer meds and combination protocols that can really help. Doug, DVM Yep. We rescued a nine-year old (estimated) Lhasa Apso in March 2020. It quickly became evident that thunderstorms, and then fireworks, were huge issues for her. A Thundershirt helps to a very mild degree. Some Benadryl kinda sorta maybe helped a little more. Talked to our vet about it and he advised trying some trazadone. That definitely helped more than the Benadryl, but as time has gone by it seems to not do as much as it initially did. So I talked to the vet again yesterday and he advises adding in a little gabapentin and seeing how that works. We have storms in the forecast next week, so we may find out then. I'd rather have her a little loopy than stressed out.Re: Dog foodFresh Pet has been in very short supply throughout the pandemic. For a little while I thought it was getting better, but it seems to be regressing now. I know all the stores in my area to check, but I wouldn't want to have to hunt it constantly in strange territory.Re: Dog foodI'd look at the first five or six ingredients in the Fresh Pet and then look for a canned food that has close to the same ingredients, especially the primary protein and carb sources. That's no guarantee, of course. But it's how I'd approach the search.Re: Charleston SC and Savannah GaCharleston - James Island County Park Savannah - Skidaway Island State ParkRe: How to discourage territorial barking at homeScroll down near the bottom of this article and read about The Positive Interrupt. It takes a lot of work but IME it's the most effective approach. And yes, it is (essentially) redirecting with food. The good thing is that once a dog learns the interrupt cue you can use it for redirecting his attention to you whenever needed. It's not specific to one behavior.Re: New study on Neutering/Spaying larry cad wrote: Are you serious? California charges more depending on if your dog is neutered or not? And I thought I had seen it all. :S:o Many municipalities all across the country have similar laws. They're not uncommon by any stretch of the imagination.Re: Behaviorist vs TrainerThe only time I use the term "behaviorist" is when referring to a veterinarian with a specialization in behavior -- American College of Veterinary Behaviorists What is a veterinary behaviorist? Or to someone who is certified by the Animal Behavior Society Applied animal behaviorists are scientists, educators, or other animal professionals with an advanced academic background in the principles of animal behavior. Applied animal behaviorists may have a background in fields as diverse as psychology, biology, zoology, veterinary medicine, or animal sciences. They may work in laboratories, zoos, farms, animal shelters, universities, corporations, or as private consultants (and beyond!). What applied animal behaviorists have in common is the application of scientific principles to improving the care, management and welfare of animals in captivity and the wild. Unless the person meets the qualifications for one of those, IMHO they're just a trainer. But there's no regulation on who can call themselves a behaviorist, so . . . buyer beware.Re: Kidney Disease - UpdateI'm so sorry.
