It's clearly European in origin and missing some accessories that would be used here. Our son studied at the University of Amsterdam for a semester last year. He bought a bike similar to the photo while there to get around -these are a common travel mode there and they all look similar too. (He named his bike Joop after Joop Zoetemelk.) He is home today (rare) and I will see if he has time for your survey. He is going back to UvA this fall to get a masters & PHD degree (economics/business) and will buy another Dutch bike to get around. Cycling in North America is an entirely different world than Europe. Bikes are a lot different than the types here and are used a lot more for recreational use than commuting. Roads are a lot different as well since they have to be shared with predominantly motor vehicles many of which are going at much higher speeds than a bike. "Mountain bikes" are a popular style here and some of the accessories would never be used. Also, I would guess that a large percentage of the users in the forum are older that use bikes more for riding in or around a campground or nearby at home, if they have bikes at all. I would suggest contacting some bicycle shops in the US and Canada. Safety accessories are common here - lighting and not on the survey, helmets (required by law in some jurisdictions (like BC)) and safety vests. I used to bike race in the 60/70s and had a stripped down, mean/lean racing machine (still have it). I would never think of riding a bike with a bell or basket, lol. Were are thinking of getting a couple of bikes for riding around a campground but would be bare bones but good quality. I'm very glad to see somebody take time to reply in such a manner. I have written down your feedback. It's possible for me to filter the results per country, so I can easily compare them with each other. If the results from the US differ to much from the rest, I can separately use them to have an idea about the difference with Europe and how the US would have to be approached. Good luck to your son! Kind regardsRe: Bike-accessory researchBucky Badger, thank you for your time. CavemanCharlie wrote: I'd be happy to take it but, I don't ride a bike. I walk instead. I'm 51 years old, I don't have a very good sense of balance, and I'm afraid of falling from a bike. At my age this could cause worse injuries then when you are young. Besides, to get a decent bike around here you have to spend at least several hundred dollars and because I would only use the bike a few times a year I don't wish to spend that much money on one. I'm sorry to hear that. In that case taking the survey doesn't make sense. Thank you for taking to reply anyway!Re: Bike-accessory research Drippin wrote: Mark RV, I looked at the survey and I think that the way that bikes are used by most in the US is much different than in The Netherlands. Here for most people they are for pleasure and or as a secondary means of transportation. One exception might be College students. In The Netherlands and other urban environments it is common for a bike to be a primary means of transportation. As a result you might find that the responses to your survey from the US are very different than from respondents in the EU or Asia. Good luck. By the way we our son is considering a semester to full year of study in Delft. It's a really nice place. Nice to hear, Delft is a nice place indeed. I'm targeting the Dutch/EU people that ride the bikes for pleasure, so the US results might nog be that bad. I will be able to filter the results per nationality, so I can compare them. Thank you all for taking the time, it helps a lot. Much appreciated.Re: Bike-accessory research beemerphile1 wrote: I took your survey, I didn't have any problem with it but I doubt this thread meets the forum rules. Thank you for your time! If this thread doesn't meet the forum rules I expect moderators wil take action. In that case I apologise. Good luck with that project but you may not get many takers as we tend to wary of giving out too much information about our private lives. Sorry. "We" being the people on this forum? I had no idea about that, but I don't see how the questions in the survey could harm anybody. Anyway, if people don't want to take the survey they don't have to. What baloney! Sounds like marketing research for accessories. No one who takes bikes camping is worried about much of the accessories you seem to be interested in - umbrella holder? An exception might be water bottle. There - Survey completed. You actually help me a lot by saying this, since I'm trying to find out what bike accessories are most important to people. I don't use any myself (you seem to think I'm interested in them? How so?), so I can totally believe you only care about the one you mention. Thank you! The first questions are regarding types of accessories, while most after are about how people use them. That's most important for my project.Bike-accessory researchDear Sir / Madam, As a fourth-year Industrial Design student in the Netherlands, I’m working on my graduation project. By answering the following questions, you can support me in the design process. The users of RV’s, mobile home’s, caravans and campers are a target audience, since cycling is a common activity. The survey contains 21 questions and takes around 5 minutes. To get a better picture of what products fall under the term “bike accessories”, question 3 gives a list of examples.
