We were surprised also at the lower quality of some trailers when we first started shopping seriously. For us, the tradeoff was between weight and quality, and of course budget. We are weekend only campers, living in MN. Our season is very short. Our best fit was lower quality, less weight, better price. My hubby is handy, so he can fix anything that doesn't hold up. We only camp about 6 -7 weekends and one full week a year, so we are not that hard on the trailer. Of course, we also take care of it proactively. Keep your eyes open. I'm crossing my fingers that the perfect gem will come along for you!Re: Looking to get into Rv'ing but have questions.I don't have any great wisdom to impart, but I read your post and was just excited for you. What a fun, happy, exciting new adventure! Unlike many on these boards, my hubby and I started camping/rv,ine after our kids were grown. We have had a blast hauling around to the nearby state parks, riding our bikes, going for hikes, and reading peacefully around the campsite. Enjoy!!! ((I'm in the buy new group. Who needs the headache?)Re: Newbie Looking For The Right TrailerJMO, but I think 10 years old is really old for a travel trailer. You seem to be looking at higher end models (AIRSTREAM, NASH, ARCTIC FOX), but I think age matters even with them. I have only owned cheap, entry level travel trailers. I know an airstream can hold up really well. Still, you sound like great condition is important to you. You might be happier with a newer model. Whatever one you choose, have a great time!viking 17 BH mini reviewSome of you may recall that last year at this time, I traded in my trusty 13 ft Road Runner for a bigger trailer. We purchased a 17 ft viking bunk house, which has a bed, two small bunks and a dinette. Gotta have room for the grandbabies these days. As I'm getting ready for our second season, I thought I'd post a little review. THE GOOD: #The trailer tows great. It is around 3200 gvw, and towing it with our chevy traverse works great. Factory installed tow package. We use a sway bar. #Nothing broke! Small blessings. #It fits 5 easily. Two on the bed, two on the bunks, one adult on the dinette. The bunks fit an average size adult comfortably. #It has plenty of storage. I was concerned, but our clothes fit in the overhead cubbies, and our dishes and food all have a permanent home. #The bigger bathroom is great with little ones. I put a little sudsy water in the tub and hose them down with the spray nozzle. Fun and effective! # we towed it from St. Paul MN to Custer state park, SD. lots of room for grandkids, kids, grandma n grandpa. THE BAD # it is narrow. We are used to a wider trailer and we have to suck it in to get past each other in the aisle. #The bunks are hot and stuffy. A little rotating fan near the sink really helps. #The front door only opens half way. It is a design flaw for sure. The awning rails block a fully extended door. It's a bit annoying, but not much more than that. #The bunks are right in front of the blowing furnace. The bunkers are dying of heat, while the bed sleepers are cold. We are considering mods to help with this. Thankfully, even in MN we don't use the furnace that much. THE BARE TRUTH I really miss my little Road Runnner. But, this camper is much more functional for bigger family outings. Have a great season!Re: Traveling with LOTS of bikesI think two vehicles is a good option. It will cost much more in gas, but it might be safer than overloading the tow vehicle and cheaper than buying a toy hauler. Im guessing that with a 37 ft trailer and 10 kids, more of your trips are closer to home than not. good luck and well done taking all those kids camping. You are definitely a rock star.Re: Another oldie but goodie (not mine)Beautiful!Re: Smaller bunk house trailer recommendationsThanks for the update, let us know what tt you get.Re: Opening Day JittersPractice makes perfect. Cut yourself some slack and enjoy the ride! And like others have said, make lists! My style is more spontaneous than the invasion of normandy, but the big safety things we check and double check. have fun! You can buy anything you forgot along your way.Re: Smoky Mountain CampgroundsWe stayed at Elkmont a few years ago. We had a great site on the river. It is a beautiful place and we loved it. We were there in June and it was HOT. A battery operated fan was our best friend. We saw the synchronous (spelling?) fireflies. Amazing! We made sure we walked a few yards on the Appalachian Trail, just for bragging rights :) We "hiked" the Appalachian Trail!
