All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Campgrounds in / near Pittsburgh, PAWalk around the Strip District for some interesting shops and street food. We haven't been there for a while so I can't recommend any specific place but I think there are a wide range of restaurants if you want more than a hoagie or pizza(Pittsburgh specialties). If you're interested in history visit the John Heinz History Center which is close enough to walk to from the strip parking lot. Point State Park is where the Monongahela and the Allegheny Rivers join to form the Ohio. It has walking trails and a small museum. You can't visit Pittsburgh without taking the incline to the top of Mount Washington to see the view. The aviary is fairly small but we like it because the major exhibits are large free flight areas. It rains a lot in Pittsburgh so hope you have good weather!Re: Campgrounds in / near Pittsburgh, PAIt's really hard for RVers to visit Pittsburgh because there aren't any campgrounds near the city. We lived in Pittsburgh for about 40 years and now that we're fulltimers we go back to visit at least once a year. Finding overnight parking is a problem for us. A few friends have driveways large enough for our little RV but most of the time we stay in Walmart or other big box stores. None are convenient to the city but I'm sure some are on the bus line. The downtown casino has a garage but doesn't have a lot as far as I know. We have parked at Station Square but this site http://www.ppgpublicparking.com/is showing RV parking in the Strip District (we've parked here for the day) and North Shore lots only. Both are on a tour bus route - http://www.pghtours.com/ I don't believe you'll be able to stay overnight. What are your plans for your visit? Have a good time!Re: Finding usable camp sitesYou are going to be limited but you should be able to find sites that will work if you research the campgrounds carefully. We fulltime and I (Karen) use a wheelchair. We have found that many campgrounds do not have accessible sites and if they do the sites often do not fit the criteria for handicapped access. Sometimes the fact that the restrooms are next door is the only reason they are considered accessible which is not a priority for us since I use our RV bathroom exclusively. There isn't a standard for accessibility in campgrounds and as far as I know there are no federal requirements to provide accessibility unless the campground is undergoing a major rebuild. The best accessible campsites have long, wide, flat paved parking pads with the pavement extending under the table and around the fire ring. These are rare but they are out there. I write about accessibility at every campground that we visit but we tend to boondock and stay in smaller campgrounds which may not work well for you. I can give you information about some that are so good that they've stuck in my mind if you're interested or you can just scan through all of my blog posts where I mention a campground - http://rollinginarv-wheelchairtraveling.blogspot.com/search/label/CAMPGROUNDS Please feel free to PM me or contact me through my blog if you're curious about anything.Re: Painting RV inside...Scrub it, prime it, paint it. We painted the walls on our new motorhome because we didn't like the colors. No problems at all in eight years. We repainted last year just for a different look. Scrubbed and painted the second time but didn't prime. Looks great!Re: Class C full timing downsidesWe've been fulltiming in a class C for over twenty years so we've had a few trips to the repair shop. Major repairs have involved motel stays. Minor repairs can usually done in a day but if not we have stayed in our RV in the lot.Re: Flooring Regrets .... Any ?We installed commercial grade sheet flooring. It's tough, dirt does not stick to it, and it looks great even after 7 years of fulltime living. Looking forward to seeing your finished remodel!Re: What would you add to your RV experience?More space between the sites with natural vegetation preserved or replanted. Generator free sections and a ban on construction type generators.Re: Advanced trip planning? Yes or no? TexasShadow wrote: we limit our reservations to places that are heavily visited...like yellowstone, custer state park, yosemite, grand canyon, etc. if you don't need full hookups, there are LOTS of campgrounds to choose from. if you stop a bit early...like 3 or 4 p.m., you will find better sites to choose from. if you are not absolutely against overnight stops at rest areas, walmarts or flying j truck stops, etc. then you're free of the worry of not finding an acutal campground for the one night stay. This is about the extent of our planning too. We also do a lot of dispersed camping on public land.Re: Dispersed camping protocolIt's mostly just commonsense. If you do a search on boondocking rules or etiquette you'll find a lot of suggestions. This one looks pretty good to me - https://axleaddict.com/rvs/The-RVing-Life-Good-Boondocking-EtiquetteRe: RV Trip Planner Jim Norman wrote: Flying-J actually lists RV Parking at their locations. They are now owned by Petro. Does Petro have the same services available to us as FJ? What about QT, Loves, TA and others? anyone have definitive info? As far as I know Flying J is the only truck stop with special long spaces for RVs. They are often used by people with box trucks or semi trucks without trailers attached so the spaces are sometimes full. Even though Petro now owns Flying J they are not making the Petro stations more RV friendly.
