But my experience with some 5th wheels is that there is usually a manual back up that would raise or lower your landing gear. I would look for that in your owners manual if you still have it. You may be able to call a mobile mechanic too as well if you have to.Re: 12v coolersThanks for the info guys. If I get one I am definitely going to run it off of my 2 golf cart batts. I have the harbor freight solar panels that seem to do a great job keeping my batts charged. So I figure it should do the trick powering the cooler during the day with the trailer batteries helping out during the heavy power draw times, and at night of course. Well thanks again, especially for the cheaper options. EricRe: 12v coolersThanks for the input. I spoke with a guy who does quite a bit of overlanding and he said that they really do not pull that many amps. I have seen that there are some 12v coolers that only cool to 30 or 40 below ambient. The ones I am interested in claim to be able to freeze your food. Anyway, thanks again Eric12v coolersThis topic has been moved to another forum. You can read it here: 3025816812v coolersHello everyone, our last camping trip into the Eastern Sierras where the temp stayed near 92 for a week and a half has caused my to look into buying a 12v freezer/fridge cooler. Such as: Dometic CFX75DZW 12v Electric Powered Cooler, Fridge Freezer. We spent a lot of money on ice, and I want peace of mind that our food won't go bad. So I was hoping to get some insight from anyone here who has experience with this type of product. We have a tent trailer with no real means for refrigeration, and so must rely on a cooler. We go for multiple weeks when we go so I think I need a cooler that is at least 75 qts, since our current cooler is around 110 qts. So what should I be looking for, any thoughts? Thank you for your help. EricRe: GMC/Silverado 2500 GasPoorboy, Was your younger brother towing their 5k trailer, or were they empty? I am in the same boat as the op and I am trying to determine whether I go diesel or gas. ThanksStraight-line weight distribution system• o Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control ... o • Anyone have experience with this set up? pros cons? If you switched to, or from this system why? I am considering getting this and would like some feedback. ThanksRe: Enough truck for 5th wheel?Ok so help me understand please. If I climb a hill with a slightly "under powered" engine and can only do 40mph compared to 60mph with a "modern" power plant why is this a bad thing? The way I see it is this, as long as you control your RPM when climbing a hill and control your decent on the backside of the hill the only difference when comparing power plants is that one climbs the hill a bit slower than the other given the same set RPM for each engine. Why is this a big issue? I realize that the modern transmissions have hill decent control and things like this, but dang how did we do it back then when we didn't have these luxuries? My 2005 Starwood 28rl weighed about 10k fully loaded and I am sure that there were Dodge 2500 w/ 5.7 hemi trucks pulling these all day long. So as long as the axle ratings are fine, and assuming he has the right rated tires he should be fine. The only thing he gains is getting up the hill a bit faster. IMORe: Enough truck for 5th wheel?I would think that you'd be ok. The mfg has made a pin weight of about 15-16% so this is in your favor. It used to be that FWs were 20-25% pin weight. However I've been looking lately for a new FW and I am seeing a lot of mfgs going with lighter pin weights..at least on the "entry" level models (even on the non-"half-ton" models). Personally I would trust what the mfg says about their pin weight. They are the ones who designed it and distributed the weight to get to the number they have published. So the difference between a 25% pin at gvwr and 16% pin is approx. 1235lbs, that is a lot of underwear and socks in your bedroom. Even if you consider propane and batteries, we're still only talking about 200lbs for those items. That leaves you with 1000lbs to reach the 25% pin weight. I seriously doubt someone who is paying attention would get there. Having said all this I think you should go out and weigh the vehicles if you are concerned, otherwise go out and have fun.Re: need help choosing the best solution to solve sway issueOk so a 1200 lb hitch translates to either 8000lbs or 12000 pound trailer 15% or 10% respectively. Is a 22ft toy hauler 8000? Maybe, but if it 12000lbs or more I'd bet that there is some serious overloading on the trailer itself. If the tongue weight is really as much as 2000 lbs that would mean that the trailer weighs either 20,000 lbs(10%) or 13,000 lbs(15%) Something is seriously overloaded in this scenario. My question is this, what are the actual ratings of your trailer(GVWR)? Then what is the actual weight of the trailer at the scales when fully loaded? Now move all but the tongue jack off of the scale and weigh it, by disconnecting the T.V. from the trailer with the tongue jack on the scale. This is how you can really determine what is happening no guessing, not worth the risk. Then you can start trying to fix the sway problem. As was stated before too much tongue weight can also increase sway because you are removing to much weight off of the front axle. A bigger truck will not always eliminate sway, but a properly balanced T.V. and Trailer can reduce it to nearly nothing. Maybe a Hensley Arrow will help. Just my two cents.
