Here in Navarre, there are 4 campgrounds on the bay. I believe they all have a small beach on the bay. The gulf is short (or long on weeekends) drive from all... We enjoyed tent camping at Paynes Prairie Preserve/State Park. Didnt see the buffalo but did see the Spanish wild horses. Nearby Sweetwater Wetlands Park is a nice day trip but you are in the open (sun screen/water needed). Unfortunately, as with most (all?) FL State Parks, getting reservations will be difficult. Here in Navarre, there are 3 primary private campgrounds on the sound: Navarre Beach, Emerald Beach and Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa probably the most expensive but i dont know costs. If not focused on staying on the coast, look into the various state campgrounds inland such as in the Blackwater State Park like Bear Lake Campground.
