Both options, plus the RV have their time and place for us. Funny that I come across this thread after making the final decisions/reservations following about a month of penciling out a 5500-mile , 25 day round-trip jaunt this summer. Flying would have actually been the fastest and cheapest, except Dexter the corgi needs to go with me (going to Ohio for a big competition). He is a bit too big to go in the cabin (the others are smaller and can/could), and there are only very narrow circumstances under which I'm OK with putting him in cargo. Direct flights on Alaska Airlines only, and only when temps are below 75F and above 50F. We couldn't get that to happen, so no flight. I could have made far better time taking just the minivan and hoteling it, but because of the outrageous rates at the on-site hotel and pricey options along the way, taking the TT is just about a wash, even with the 10mpg towing vs 25mpg in my minivan. I have my own bed, everything is clean to my standards, and I like the food better! We will take a couple of layover days and explore a few regions that have made our short-list to move to after retiring, so it's a multipurpose trip.Re: New Working LGDsSorry to hear about Duke's diagnosis. Glad you were able to develop a plan quickly. As for not having dogs on HW preventative, where we live it's quite common. I have to specifically ask for a HW test every year at the vet. All of our jokes about it being a dry heat aside, it is very dry and not really much risk of HW. My dogs are on a preventative because we travel with them, and going more than 50-ish miles from home can put us into a climate where the risk is present. If they were homebodies I wouldn't do it.Central CA to Cincinnati? The trip is planned for June. 25ft TT pulled by 2017 Tundra5.7 Time is somewhat of the essence, but not at the expense of safety or excessive stress on the road. I'm thinking I-40 then 44 up through MO, and across on 70/74. We haven't towed east of Flagstaff on I40 before. Am I missing something I should know about?Re: Busy few weeks coming.....How did you do in CO? A friend was there watching, gave great commentary of a few runs on FB.Re: Blocking behind TT steps Lwiddis wrote: I’ll take the puppy! Problem solved. um, no. :pRe: Blocking behind TT stepsThanks BCSnob! I think I have a piece of lattice out in the shed! We're competing the next two weekends with Dexter, the 3 1/2 y/o boy. He's doing Rally and Obedience this month, and as also doing the conformation thing. Not much herding interest. Little Dora shows promise as a true dual dog. Parents and grandparents on both sides proven on stock, and she's structurally excellent as well.Blocking behind TT stepsWe are starting to pack up and prep for our first substantial trip in the new TT, and a puzzler has presented itself. 90% of our camping is dry camping at dog shows or trials. We like to create a fenced "yard" of exercise pens at our setup (we are not at campgrounds when we do this) In the old Bounder, we simply used a short 18" pen to run against the side of the vehicle to keep the dogs from running under. It cleared behind the steps just fine. In the new TT, there is 11.5" ground clearance behind the stairs. The two adult dogs wouldn't bother, but we've got a new 12 week old puppy who would be under those stairs in a heartbeat. Ideas? Bonus if they can easily connect to ex-pens on both sides via eye snaps or carabiners. Oh, and welcome Dora - she'll be 12 weeks old on Wednesday! Re: First Trip This SeasonGlad the heat wasn't as bad as it could have been. Sorry to hear about BJ, glad you were able to make her more comfortable. Liver cancer is what stole my Buddy from me. I curse it daily.Re: Cooper, not good (final update last page)Sorry for your loss. Even when you know it's time, it's still so heartbreaking. RIP Cooper.Re: 580 /880 or 680 around SF bayThanks. I get really queasy going over GG in a passenger car, I think I'll pass on towing over it. My question about the FasTrak lanes was for the bridge tolls. Just easier to pop my Metro FasTrak into the TV for this trip and let it charge the tolls to that account. Coming through on a Sunday, the "express" lanes aren't really express lanes anyways.
