Sad, but we are planning a short rip in a couple of weeks :):):)Re: Choosing Gasoline or Diesel Powered?Again, these posts were very helpful to this newbie. I thought a Class A gas would be best based on cost if most travel was below 5000 ft Above 5000 ft I guessed I would need to accept a slow ride up the mountain. Based on driving both I decided that longer hauls up north would push me towards a DP even if I would be parked most of the time I was up north. The possibility of multiple days of driving pushed me to a DP. I also learned I like slides. While I am sure others have other opinions, the positive posts and personal experience regarding Newmar, Winebago, and Tiffin have made me favor these MH. I have placed an order for a Tiffin Allegro Red. Not that it is definitely the best but that it is among the better affordable DP MH's. I like it and as a shopper of an affordable MH I decided that a lower end DP was better than a higher end gas MH. It had less to do with mileage, torque, HP, etc. The DP just drove better. If I was planning on doing most of my driving near home I would have saved a bunch of money and went with gas. But as I expect to drive day after day sometimes I decided the DP was better for me. If I ever decide I will stay closer to home with my MH I might recommend gas or a Fred. If I planned on driving fewer miles per day on my journeys again I think I would have gone gas. The driving of both and the comments on this board helped me make the right choice for me. I hope they help make the right choice for you as well. Now I just can not wait for the silly thing to be built so I can join some of you on the road. Again thanks to all pro and con as your experiences really helped.Re: Choosing Gasoline or Diesel Powered? B Bob wrote: It is absolutely positively not trye that the house of a motor home quickly depreciates. Or that things will be shot at 10 years. My previous motor home was 34 years old when I sold it. Many of the things in the house were original and worked fine. Motor homes tend to fit into categories of use for fulltiming, snowbirding, vacationing-weekender. Fulltime coaches like Fortetravel, Country Coach, Bluebird, Prevost, some Monaco coaches have very durable houses that will last for decades. Even coaches that were not that heavily build will last a long time if taken care of. The big deal is to keep up with things. Don't let the to-do list get too long. My old coach was a GMC and though I loved it, it was as fragile as they come. Many many old Bounders and Winnebagos that were not expensive coaches to start with are still going strong. And higher end motor homes like old Bluebirds are in extremely good condition after decades of use. Well made full timer coaches should easily go 25 years without problems. I have looked at 20 year old Country Coaches that were near perfect and everything worked. Same with Bluebirds and Prevost. I am trying to decide between more normal consumer class A diesel or gas RV's and you point to 500k to 1 million dollar coaches that will last a lot longer than 10 years (25 years). OK, but I still do not see a lot of older consumer oriented RV's on the road or in the state park I regularly bicycle in (not that their are not exceptions).Re: Choosing Gasoline or Diesel Powered? This thread is very helpful for a first time buyer. The DP seem a lot more appealing, quieter, ride better, and can be driven much longer. The newer gas MH seem noisier, and more affordable but with sufficient power up to around 35 ft in length even if you need to run high RPM's to get sufficient power. But while the DP motor will last a long time the rest of the stuff in a MH seems to deteriorate quickly. Am I wrong in assuming I will want to get rid of either a gas or DP after 10 years due to other MH repair headaches? I guess I get the impression I have to determine if I will enjoy a DP enough to justify the added initial expense, but can not count on the DP lasting longer as the gas engine MH will last as long as the rest of the MH, but the Diesel engine will out last the rest of the MH. I am sure there are various opinions on this but this seems to be my impression from the various reading I have done. As a new shopper I am just curious if other agree with my summary impression? Any way this site seems very useful to this newbie confused by shopping.
